Step into the psychedelic world of the 1960s, where experimentation, liberation, and a desire for change brewed among the youth of America. This era became synonymous with an unforgettable adventure led by author Ken Kesey, his charismatic accomplice Neal Cassady, the Merry Pranksters, and the iconic Grateful Dead. Join us as we delve into the wild and captivating stories of these key figures and their enthralling escapades that left an indelible mark on counterculture.

The Birth of a Movement

In the early 1960s, a wave of alternative thinking and the rejection of societal norms began to ripple through the veins of America's youth. Spearheading this movement was Ken Kesey, author of the groundbreaking novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Kesey's intimate experiences working in a mental institution spurred him towards a quest for freedom, self-expression, and exploration of altered states of consciousness.

Enter Neal Cassady, a legendary figure renowned for his connection to the Beat Generation and his wild, unpredictable personality. Cassady impressively navigated through life on the edge, constantly pushing boundaries and embodying the epitome of the free-spirited counterculture ethos. With his infectious charm, Cassady became the driving force behind Kesey's adventures.

To bring their vision to life and document their experiences, Kesey and Cassady formed a group called the Merry Pranksters. Comprising a vibrant ensemble of artists, writers, musicians, and misfits, this eclectic crew sparked a revolution that would come to define an entire generation.

The Acid Tests

At the heart of the Merry Pranksters' journey were the "Acid Tests" – unique events that blended art, music, and the consumption of LSD, a powerful hallucinogenic substance. These tests became a theater of experimentation, where participants dived headfirst into the surreal, vibrant world created by Kesey's band of merrymakers.

The Acid Tests were not just about altering one's state of mind; they were an opportunity to challenge the boundaries of social conventions, question authority, and encourage radical self-expression. The Grateful Dead, then an emerging band, provided the soundtrack to these mind-expanding spectacles, intertwining their psychedelic melodies with the vivid experiences of the attendees.

With their vibrant bus named "Further" as their chariot, Kesey and the Merry Pranksters embarked on a cross-country trip, spreading their message of freedom, love, and transcendence. Through their journey, they sought to create a sense of unity, breaking down the walls between performer and audience, and sparking a collective consciousness that would resonate for decades to come.

Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test

The culmination of their adventures came in the form of Tom Wolfe's iconic book, "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test." Wolfe, a renowned journalist, immersed himself in the Pranksters' world, becoming both an observer and participant. His immersive storytelling captured the essence of their journey – a whirlwind of psychedelic experiences, mind-bending encounters, and a profound exploration of the boundaries of normality.

Wolfe's book served as a time capsule, allowing future generations to glimpse the magic and madness that unfolded during the heyday of the counterculture movement. It depicted the confrontations with society, the highs and lows of drug-induced trips, and the search for enlightenment amidst social unrest.

The Legacy Lives On

Decades may have passed since the fervor of the Acid Tests, but the influence and impact of Kesey, Cassady, the Merry Pranksters, and the Grateful Dead continue to shape our cultural landscape. Their audacity to challenge norms and embrace a sense of communal belonging paved the way for future counterculture movements.

Notably, the Grateful Dead became one of the most influential bands in rock history, carrying the spirit of the Acid Tests and the Merry Pranksters to new generations of fans through their transcendent live performances and exploratory musical style.

Ken Kesey continued to captivate audiences with his writing and vision until his passing in 2001. His legacy challenges readers to question societal systems and norms, urging them to seek individual freedom and truth.

The colorful spirit of the Merry Pranksters continues to thrive within alternative communities and spheres of art and activism. From Burning Man to various music festivals infused with a counterculture ethos, the flame sparked by Kesey and his Pranksters still burns brightly.

A bullet train of a book, fast-paced, hilarious, rich with action. A harbinger of good things to come in mysterious ways.

It all began at a cocktail party at Wallace Stegner’s for the Stanford writing class of 1958. Ken Kesey and Ken Babbs became cronies, embarking on a frolicking, rambunctious adventure that lasted over 40 years. Babbs calls the 70 stories of this book “burlesques” because, after 85 years of living, much of it in the wide friendly center of an evolving, at times psychedelic culture, memory no longer can, or even should include an exact retelling, but only a tasty sprinkling of the truth, mixed with an endless enigma, all topped with the best of humor and heart.

The troupe of characters include the Kens Kesey and Babbs, Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Gregory Corso, Timothy Leary, Jerry Garcia, Pigpen, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mountain Girl, Sonny Barger, Larry McMurtry, Wavy Gravy, Hunter S. Thompson, Kirk Douglas, Paul Newman, Jan Kerouac, Bill Walton, Wendell Berry, a pick-up bed-sized sturgeon, and always the many free-spirited, creative, friendly men and women who made up the Merry Band of Pranksters.

Come along for the ride on the famous bus trip to Manhattan. Join the Hells Angels at their partying best. Drop in for the early Acid Tests. Experience the Berkeley Vietnam anti-war rally. Relish the stories of Kesey’s pot busts and “suicide.” Climb aboard—“Board!”—for six months on the lam in Mexico. Take the Further tours with the Grateful Dead. Make the ultimate move to Oregon, where Babbs and Kesey grew a magical friendship and collaboration until Kesey passed in 2001.

Irreverent, unencumbered by social norms, literary and poetic, Cronies is a poignant view of the Sixties and beyond from someone who was there, and remembers it well. Kind of…
