Political communication has always played a vital role in shaping the discourse surrounding self-determination, and with the advent of the internet and new media technologies, the ways in which individuals engage with political issues and express their desires for greater autonomy and independence have drastically changed. The 36th edition of the "Communicating Self Determination Frontiers In Political Communication" conference aims to explore the evolving dynamics of political communication in the context of self-determination.

As we navigate through the diverse voices and socio-political landscapes that characterize our world today, the importance of effective communication mechanisms becomes even more evident. Whether it is the struggle for statehood, regional autonomy, or cultural preservation, self-determination has become a critical issue across the globe. Establishing platforms for communication that amplify the voices of those affected by self-determination movements is imperative for building bridges and breaking down barriers.

At the heart of this conference is a desire to investigate the role of communication in fostering and sustaining self-determination movements. As the political landscape grows increasingly complex, effective communication strategies become crucial tools for initiating and sustaining change. Exploring the role that various media platforms, including traditional journalism, social media, and online activism, play in shaping the self-determination discourse will provide valuable insights into how we can effectively engage with these movements.

Breaking Barriers: The Power of Language

One of the primary objectives of the conference is to examine how language and rhetoric can either bridge or widen the gaps within self-determination movements. Language can be a powerful tool for unity or division and has the ability to shape public opinion, mobilize support, or stifling dissent. By exploring the use of different modes of language, such as official documents, speeches, and social media posts, we can gain a deeper understanding of how subtle linguistic nuances influence the self-determination narrative and shape public perception.

Additionally, the conference aims to bring to the forefront the importance of inclusivity in political communication. Ensuring diverse voices are heard and represented in the self-determination discourse is vital for a fair and democratic dialogue. By examining the barriers that prevent marginalized communities from fully participating in political communication, we can identify ways to break down these barriers and promote inclusivity and representation.

Building Bridges: The Role of New Media

The rise of new media platforms has revolutionized political communication and has provided individuals with unprecedented avenues for self-expression. From hashtag activism to viral videos, new media platforms allow individuals to engage with self-determination issues on a global scale. The conference will delve into the impact and potential of these new media platforms, exploring how they can facilitate dialogue, raise awareness, and build bridges between communities undertaking self-determination struggles.

Moreover, the role of traditional journalism in shaping the self-determination discourse will also be examined. Investigative journalism has long been a catalyst for change, bringing hidden issues to light and forcing public discourse. Understanding the evolving role of journalism and its potential to inform and mobilize public sentiment will provide valuable insights into how traditional media can continue to play a crucial role in self-determination movements.

Conference Highlights and Keynote Speakers

The "Communicating Self Determination Frontiers In Political Communication 36" conference will feature a diverse lineup of speakers, including renowned journalists, scholars, activists, and policymakers. Some of the highlights of the conference include:

  • Keynote speech by Nobel Laureate in Literature, exploring the power of language in shaping self-determination movements
  • Panel discussions on the role of social media and online activism in mobilizing support for self-determination movements
  • Workshops on effective communication strategies for marginalized communities and underrepresented voices
  • Award ceremony to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of political communication and self-determination activism

The 36th edition of the "Communicating Self Determination Frontiers In Political Communication" conference offers a unique opportunity to explore the ever-changing landscape of political communication in the context of self-determination. By breaking barriers and building bridges, this conference aims to shed light on the vital role communication plays in furthering the causes of autonomy, independence, and cultural preservation. Together, we can forge a path towards a more inclusive, informed, and empowered dialogue on self-determination.

As survivors of genocide, mnemonicide, colonization, and forced assimilation, American Indians face a unique set of rhetorical exigencies in US public culture. Decolonizing Native American Rhetoric brings together critical essays on the cultural and political rhetoric of American indigenous communities, including essays on the politics of public memory, culture and identity controversies, stereotypes and caricatures, mascotting, cinematic representations, and resistance movements and environmental justice.

This volume brings together recognized scholars and emerging voices in a series of critical projects that question the intersections of civic identity, including how American indigenous rhetoric is complicated by or made more dynamic when refracted through the lens of gender, race, class, and national identity. The authors assembled in this project employ a variety of rhetorical methods, theories, and texts committed to the larger academic movement toward the decolonization of Western scholarship. This project illustrates the invaluable contributions of American Indian voices and perspectives to the study of rhetoric and political communication.
