Memories Of Growing Up In Hong Kong Squatter Village
![Jese Leos](https://epilogueepic.com/author/steven-hayes.jpg)
Have you ever wondered what it was like to grow up in a tightly-knit community, where the spirit of resilience and warmth thrived despite the challenges? Let me take you on a journey back in time to my cherished memories of growing up in a squatter village in the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong.
A Unique Community
The squatter village I called home was nestled amidst the skyscrapers, a stark contrast from the dazzling city lights. It was an eclectic mix of makeshift houses, bustling alleyways, and vibrant street markets. The air was filled with a cacophony of sounds - laughter, hawkers peddling their goods, and children playing.

The community was made up of families from different walks of life, all unified by the shared experience of making the best out of limited resources. Despite the cramped living conditions, our spirits were never dampened. We found joy amidst adversity, forming lasting friendships and supporting one another through thick and thin.
A Tapestry of Childhood Adventures
As children, our imaginations ran wild in the village. Every narrow alleyway and corner held the promise of extraordinary adventures. Our playgrounds were the rooftops and vacant spaces between houses, where we would spontaneously create games and challenges.
The vibrant street markets served as a treasure trove of excitement for us. We eagerly explored the stalls, marveling at the colorful array of fruits, vegetables, and aromatic street food that filled the air. Memories of the distinct fragrance of joss sticks and the bustle of market goers still bring a smile to my face.
Lessons of Resilience and Empathy
Living in a squatter village taught me valuable life lessons from an early age. It was a constant reminder that happiness is not reliant on material possessions, but rather on the relationships and experiences we cultivate with one another. We learned to appreciate the small joys in life and to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Generosity was abundant in our community. Families shared meals, clothes, and stories, creating a sense of belonging that extended beyond the physical confines of our homes. We celebrated each other's triumphs and supported each other through difficult times, fostering a deep sense of empathy that has stayed with me to this day.
The Winds of Change
As Hong Kong grew and modernized, so too did the fate of our squatter village. The government introduced redevelopment plans to transform these vibrant communities into high-rise buildings, emphasizing progress and urbanization.
While change brought with it new opportunities and improved living conditions for many, it also meant bidding farewell to the imbued nostalgia and tight-knit community we held dear. The transition was bittersweet, as we said goodbye to the place and memories that shaped who we had become.
Preserving the Legacy
Although the physical structures of the squatter village are now gone, the memories and values it instilled in us remain. We carry the lessons of resilience, empathy, and community wherever life takes us.
The story of the squatter village is a testament to the indomitable spirit of its residents. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, human resilience and the power of a close-knit community can prevail.
As I reminisce about my childhood in the squatter village, I am filled with gratitude for the unique experiences and relationships it nurtured within me.
Join me in cherishing the memories of a bygone era and celebrating the strength of communities that transcend time and place.

Diamond Hill was one of the poorest and most backward of villages in Hong Kong when Hong Kong itself was poor and backward. Feng Chi-shun moved there in 1956, at the age of nine, as a refugee from China. As he grew up and saw friends become gamblers, triad gangsters and drug peddlers, he realized that self-improvement was the only way out of poverty. A warm memoir of a hard time and place.
