KENSINGTON, Md. – In his riveting new collection of memoirs, From Watergate to Hugo Chavez: An ex-diplomat’s memoirs, Gonzalo T. Palacios takes readers behind the scenes of Venezuela’s democratic history and its controversial, unquestionably influential president Hugo Chavez’s rise to power. In addition, he offers a portrait of the conflicted involvement of the United States government in Venezuelan affairs during his 25-year career as diplomat accredited before the White House.

Palacios’ diplomatic career began in Washington D.C. in 1974, a historic year for American politics when, six months after Palacios’ induction into office, Richard M. Nixon became the first president to resign from office following the Watergate scandal. Palacios narrates how it was that he was the first person to learn of Nixon’s resignation outside of the White House.

From 1974 – 1990, Palacios would serve as the head of press and cultural affairs at the Embassy of Venezuela under five presidents that changed the face of Venezuelan democracy. The tone of his encounters is evident in such titles as, “Fidel’s Front? Who me?”, where the author was accused of being a spy for Fidel; “Teresita and the Opus Dei” will intrigue fans of The DaVinci Code; and “Jim Jones and the People’s Temple”, details the terrifying demise of that particular religious sect. William Fulbright, literary notables such as humorist Art Buchwald, as well as other senators, Venezuelan presidents, Iranian diplomats, journalists, C.I.A. informants and other characters that populated this electrifying time in Venezuelan foreign affairs.

Dr. Gonzalo T. Palacios studied architecture and philosophy in Caracas, Rome, and Washington DC. He obtained his doctorate degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. An American citizen, he currently resides in Maryland with his wife and continues to teach philosophy.
