War is a cruel and unforgiving reality that leaves lasting scars on both individuals and nations. In the midst of chaos and destruction, heroes emerge, their stories etched in history as a testament to their unwavering courage and selflessness. The story of an army nurse in Vietnam is one such tale that resonates deeply, depicting the hardships, sacrifices, and resilience exhibited by those who served on the frontlines of battlefields.

As the Vietnam War raged on, thousands of American soldiers found themselves in a foreign, hostile land. Among them were the courageous army nurses, who took on the daunting task of providing medical care to the wounded and traumatized soldiers. These brave women faced not only the physical dangers of warfare but also the emotional toll that came with witnessing the brutality of war firsthand.

One such nurse, Mary Thompson, volunteered to serve in Vietnam, driven by a deep sense of duty and a desire to make a difference. Leaving her family and the comfort of her hometown behind, she embarked on a journey that would change her life forever.

Arriving in Vietnam, Mary was immediately confronted with the harsh reality of war. The sheer number of casualties overwhelmed the medical facilities, pushing the limits of their resources and personnel. Yet, amidst the chaos, Mary remained resolute in her commitment to saving lives.

Day and night, she worked tirelessly, tending to the wounded soldiers who arrived on her doorstep. From treating battlefield injuries to providing emotional support, Mary became an invaluable source of comfort for those in pain and distress. Her calming presence and unwavering dedication served as a beacon of hope in a sea of despair.

However, the toll of war was not limited to the physical and emotional wounds of soldiers alone. Mary, like her fellow nurses, had to confront the constant fear and uncertainty that accompanied their selfless service. The sound of bombs dropping, the sight of blood-soaked uniforms, and the emotional weight of loss were all part of their daily reality.

Despite the horrors she witnessed, Mary always believed that every life she saved made a difference. The bonds she formed with her patients, sharing their laughter and tears, provided her with strength and a sense of purpose in the face of adversity.

As the war dragged on, Mary continued to provide care to a multitude of soldiers, their stories etching a permanent mark on her heart. From young soldiers barely out of their teens to seasoned veterans longing for home, each one carried a unique narrative, reminding her of the depth of sacrifice and unwavering resilience exhibited by these brave servicemen.

Returning home after her service in Vietnam, Mary faced a new battle - the struggle to assimilate back into the society she had left behind. The trauma she had witnessed had left an indelible mark on her soul, and adjusting to civilian life proved to be a monumental task. However, Mary's strength and determination propelled her forward, and she eventually found solace in sharing her experiences with others who could empathize and understand.

The story of Mary and countless other army nurses in Vietnam serves as a powerful reminder of the profound impact war has on individuals, families, and societies as a whole. Their sacrifices should never be forgotten; their bravery should forever be honored.

As the years go by, it is our duty to remember and pay tribute to these unsung heroes, whose stories often remain untold, overshadowed by the larger narrative of war. The army nurses in Vietnam were the ones who held the hands of the wounded, who provided a glimmer of hope in the darkest of times, and who embodied the true spirit of selflessness and compassion.

So, let us never forget the story of an army nurse in Vietnam - a story that epitomizes the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love and kindness in the face of adversity. May their legacy serve as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.

Lynda Van Devanter was the girl next door, the cheerleader who went to Catholic schools, enjoyed sports, and got along well with her four sisters and parents. After high school she attended nursing school and then did something that would shatter her secure world for the rest of her life: in 1969, she joined the army and was shipped to Vietnam. When she arrived in Vietnam her idealistic view of the war vanished quickly. She worked long and arduous hours in cramped, ill-equipped, understaffed operating rooms. She saw friends die. Witnessing a war close-up, operating on soldiers and civilians whose injuries were catastrophic, she found the very foundations of her thinking changing daily.

After one traumatic year, she came home, a Vietnam veteran. Coming home was nearly as devastating as the time she spent in Asia. Nothing was the same -- including Lynda herself. Viewed by many as a murderer instead of a healer, she felt isolated and angry. The anger turned to depression; like many other Vietnam veterans she suffered from delayed stress syndrome. Working in hospitals brought back chilling scenes of hopelessly wounded soldiers. A marriage ended in divorce. The war that was fought physically halfway around the world had become a personal, internal battle.

Home before Morning is the story of a woman whose courage, stamina, and personal history make this a compelling autobiography. It is also the saga of others who went to war to aid the wounded and came back wounded -- physically and emotionally -- themselves. And, it is the true story of one person's triumphs: her understanding of, and coming to terms with, her destiny.
