The year was 1936 as seven-year-old Flora Wong, her parents and her seven siblings set sail on a 21 day voyage from the U.S. to China. Flora’s father and mother were taking there family to their home village in rural southern China where they hoped to find a new, quiet life.

Their timing was terrible. In 1937, Japan launched its invasion of China. Soon thereafter, the Second World War engulfed Flora’s new home. Amid the turmoil, Flora and her family managed to build a modest life in their isolated village. This young girl, whose only home had been Boston, learned to tend rice and vegetable, sew simple clothes and trap frogs and beetles.

As Flora neared the age of 18, her mother set a plan in motion to arrange a marriage. In this way, she could insure a return to the safety of the U.S. for Flora. In time, Flora found herself in Montana, worlds away from her small Chinese village. It was here the timid girl grew into a wife, mother, business owner and athlete. Hers is a story of authentic, ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges.
