The Birth of an Icon - The Early Years

Our journey begins in 1887 with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's inaugural novel, A Study in Scarlet. In this groundbreaking work, we are introduced to the Great Detective, Sherlock Holmes, and his loyal companion, Dr. John Watson. This now-legendary duo set the stage for countless adaptations and reimaginings across various mediums, including the stage.

One of the earliest adaptations of Holmes' adventures was William Gillette's Sherlock Holmes: A Drama in Four Acts (1899). Gillette, an American actor renowned for his portrayal of the Great Detective, brought Holmes to life on stage, captivating audiences with his masterful interpretation.

A Golden Age - Holmes Takes Center Stage

The early 20th century witnessed a surge of interest in Holmes' adventures, resulting in a flourishing of theater productions dedicated to the Great Detective. These plays often drew inspiration from Conan Doyle's original stories, but also introduced original plots and characters to captivate the audience.

One particularly notable example is The Hound of the Baskervilles (1915), adapted for the stage by F. R. Benson. This chilling tale, featuring the eerie moors and a cursed ancestral curse, transported spectators into the heart of Holmes' most perplexing case.

Modern Twists - Holmes in Contemporary Theater

As the world changed and entered the modern era, so too did the adaptations of the Great Detective's tales. Contemporary theater reimagined Holmes in innovative ways, injecting new life into the beloved character.

Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure (1984) by Steven Dietz, stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of Holmes in the contemporary theatrical scene. Drawing inspiration from Conan Doyle's stories, the play explores the potential final confrontation between Holmes and his arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty.

On the Big Screen - Holmes Transcends the Stage

It would be remiss not to mention the numerous screen adaptations that contributed to the Great Detective's legacy. Many theater productions found their way onto the silver screen, captivating a wider audience and solidifying Holmes' status as an iconic figure in popular culture.

Sherlock Holmes (2009), directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson, represents a modern take on the beloved character. With stunning visuals, thrilling action sequences, and witty banter between the detective and his companion, this film showcases how Holmes' charisma and intellect continue to enthrall audiences today.

One of the world's most well known fictional characters, Sherlock Holmes first appeared in print in 1887. The detective was featured in four novels and 56 short stories written by his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Within a decade of his creation Sherlock Holmes made his theatrical debut, first in a couple of obscure productions and soon in the celebrated play adapted by and starring William Gillette. Through the 20th century and beyond, the fictional detective featured in dozens of plays, not to mention radio programs, films, and television shows.

In Sherlock Holmes on Stage, Amnon Kabatchnik cites the many theatrical appearances of the great detective since his debut in a one-act musical satire in November 1893. Divided into three sections, this book focuses on plays written or cowritten by Conan Doyle, one-act productions, and plays written by other authors—either adaptations of the novels and stories or original works. Within these sections, each entry is arranged in chronological order and provides a plot synopsis, production details, and other unique features. Some entries identify principal actors and provide biographical sketches of the playwrights, as well as those actors who made a lasting impression as the fictional sleuth. The book also includes several appendixes that focus on special productions, plays that feature variations of the Holmes character, and a list of acting editions.
