For most people, football is more than just a sport; it's a way of life. It has the power to bring people together, create unforgettable memories, and ignite unimaginable emotions. But for me, football has an even deeper meaning. It represents my journey towards sobriety, the challenges I've overcome, and the person I've become today. This is my story, my life with sober football.

The Beginning of my Football Obsession

As a child, I was always fascinated by sports, but football had a special place in my heart. I vividly remember the exhilarating feeling of watching my favorite team score a goal or the intense anticipation before each match. It filled me with a sense of belonging and unity that I couldn't find elsewhere.

However, my passion for football was tainted by my struggles with addiction. I found solace in alcohol and drugs, using them as a temporary escape from the realities of life. During this time, football became a blur of missed opportunities and hazy memories.

The Turning Point

Rock bottom hit me hard one fateful night. After a drunken altercation at a football game, I knew I had to make a change. It was time to confront my addiction and take control of my life once and for all. Little did I know that football would play a pivotal role in my recovery.

I joined a support group filled with fellow football enthusiasts who were also battling their demons. We formed a bond through our shared love for the game and our determination to reclaim our lives. Together, we started playing sober football – a version of the sport where alcohol and drugs were entirely out of the equation.

The Healing Power of Sober Football

Sober football became my refuge, a safe space where I could channel my energy and emotions into something positive. It allowed me to reconnect with the sport I loved so deeply, without the destructive elements that had once plagued my life.

Through sober football, I rediscovered the joy of teamwork, friendship, and perseverance. Each match was a reminder that regardless of our backgrounds or struggles, we were all equal on the field. There were no judgments, only encouragement and support.

Furthermore, the physical intensity of the game provided a much-needed outlet for my cravings and frustrations. The rush of endorphins replaced the need for substances, and I felt my body growing stronger with each training session and game. Sober football became my ultimate therapy.

The Road to Redemption

As I continued my journey of sobriety through sober football, I saw remarkable changes in all aspects of my life. It allowed me to rebuild broken relationships, regain self-confidence, and pursue new opportunities.

I became an advocate for sober football and started sharing my story at local support groups, schools, and even sporting events. I wanted to inspire others who were facing similar battles, letting them know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Inspired by my own experience, I decided to pursue a career in sports rehabilitation. I wanted to combine my love for football and my newfound knowledge about addiction recovery to help others on their journey towards sobriety.

Sober football has played an integral role in shaping the person I am today. It has taught me the importance of resilience, community, and the healing power of sports. Through this unique version of the game, I have not only found my passion but also my purpose.

If you're struggling with addiction or looking for a fresh perspective on your own recovery journey, I encourage you to explore the world of sober football. It might just be the spark you need to ignite a lifelong transformation.

THE BRILLIANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER.

‘A searingly honest account of the Arsenal legend’s quest to recover from alcoholism. Unflinchingly brave.’ Sunday Mirror

Being Addicted was only half the story, now comes the stunning new autobiography from Tony Adams, Sober.

Tony Adams was a charismatic figure on the football field, a true leader for Arsenal and England. He won league titles in three separate decades, and after the Gunners moved to their new stadium at the Emirates, it was fitting that a statue of him was erected outside to celebrate his extraordinary career. But, for much of that time, he was also drinking heavily and eventually admitted in his book Addicted that he was an alcoholic.

Now, in that book’s stunning successor Sober, Adams reveals what happened next. He discusses the impact that Arsene Wenger had when he arrived at Arsenal in 1996, and how the manager’s new methods helped extend his career and brought new success to the club. Always a great thinker on the game, Adams moved into coaching and management on retirement, playing a key role in Portsmouth’s famous FA Cup triumph in 2008, and taking on new challenges in the Netherlands, Azerbaijan, China and now Spain to broaden his perspective.

He movingly explains the struggles he’s faced to stay sober for twenty years and why he set up Sporting Chance, the charity which provides treatment and support for sports stars suffering from addictions. He gives his incisive thoughts on England’s continued failings in major tournaments and assesses why Arsenal have struggled to repeat the title-winning formula of his own time there.

Sober is a truly inspirational memoir from someone who has battled with his demons, but has continued to take things on, one day at a time.
