China's Ancient Marvels: Unveiling Stories From the Past

China, a vast and diverse country, boasts a history as enigmatic as its landscapes. From the imposing Great Wall to the spellbinding Terracotta Army, China's ancient marvels never cease to amaze those who venture to explore them.

The Great Wall of China, a monumental feat of human engineering, stretches over 21,000 kilometers and is a living testament to the country's rich historical heritage. A walk along this awe-inspiring structure allows you to trace the footsteps of past dynasties and imagine the tales of conquests and defense that echo through time.

The Terracotta Army, discovered in 1974, offers a glimpse into the mastery of ancient artisans and the grand vision of China's first Emperor, Qin Shi Huang. The intricate details and overwhelming number of life-sized clay soldiers guarding the emperor's tomb leave visitors in awe, as they ponder the craftsmanship and dedication that went into its creation.

China's landscapes effortlessly blend history with natural beauty. The serene Li River, winding like a liquid silk ribbon through the karst mountains, has inspired countless painters and poets throughout history. The mystical Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, with its towering sandstone pillars shrouded in mist, served as the inspiration for the floating mountains of Pandora in the film "Avatar."

South Korea's Cultural Tapestry: Nature as a Sanctuary

South Korea, often overshadowed by its larger neighbors, offers a unique perspective on the interplay between nature and history. The country's rich cultural tapestry is inseparable from its pristine landscapes, creating a harmonious fusion that invites exploration.

The beautiful countryside of South Korea, with its rolling hills and green fields, provides the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The Seoraksan National Park, known for its breathtaking mountain vistas and colorful foliage, has been a source of inspiration for artists and nature lovers alike.

South Korea's ancient temples, nestled among the mountains, exude tranquility and spiritual significance. The intricate architecture and peaceful surroundings of temples like Bulguksa and Haeinsa invite introspection and reflection, offering visitors a chance to reconnect with nature and themselves.

Taiwan's Hidden Treasures: A Collision of Nature and History

Taiwan, an island often overlooked by travelers, boasts a unique blend of natural wonders and historical sites. The island's volcanic landscapes, steep cliffs, and lush forests create a stunning backdrop for a journey through time and nature.

The Taroko Gorge, Taiwan's most iconic natural landmark, is a testament to the power of the elements. The marble walls of the gorge, carved by the Liwu River over millions of years, stand as a majestic testament to the Earth's processes. Walking through the narrow tunnels and gazing up at the towering walls, it's hard not to be in awe of Mother Nature's sculptural masterpiece.

For the full course of his remarkable career, Gary Snyder has continued his study of Eastern culture and philosophies. From the Ainu to the Mongols, from Hokkaido to Kyoto, from the landscapes of China to the backcountry of contemporary Japan, from the temples of Daitokoji to the Yellow River Valley, it is now clear how this work has influenced his poetry, his stance as an environmental and political activist, and his long practice of Zen. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Asia became a vocation for Snyder. While most American writers looked to the capitals of Europe for their inspiration, Sndyer looked East. American letters is profoundly indebted to this geographical choice.

Long rumored to exist, The Great Clod collects more than a dozen chapters, several published in The Coevolution Quarterly almost forty years ago when Snyder briefly described this work as "The China Book," and several others, the majority, never before published in any form. "Summer in Hokkaido," "Wild in China," "Ink and Charcoal, " "Stories to Save the World," "Walking the Great Ridge," these essays turn from being memoirs of travel to prolonged considerations of art, culture, natural history and religion. Filled with Snyder's remarkable insights and briskly beautiful descriptions, this collection adds enormously to the major corpus of his work, certain to delight and instruct his readers now and forever.
