The Horrors of Escape

Ali's escape from Afghanistan was riddled with dangers, constantly putting his life on the line. As he crossed borders and sought refuge in neighboring countries, he encountered smugglers, traffickers, and cruel predators who took advantage of vulnerable refugees. The journey became a nightmare, with no respite in sight.

Separated from his family, Ali relied solely on his determination and sheer resilience to survive. He lived in squalid conditions, battling hunger, exhaustion, and the ever-present threat of violence. But he refused to give up.

A Ray of Hope

After enduring unimaginable hardships, Ali's luck finally turned. He caught the attention of a compassionate organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating child refugees. Their intervention marked a turning point in his life.

Provided with shelter, food, and access to education, Ali began to heal from the scars of his past. He discovered his love for art and storytelling, using his experiences to inspire others and raise awareness about the plight of refugees.

A Bright New Beginning

As Ali blossomed into a talented artist and storyteller, his journey caught the attention of various media outlets and organizations. His captivating storytelling and unique perspective resonated with people worldwide.

This exposure led to life-changing opportunities for Ali. He was offered a scholarship to pursue his education and artistic endeavors in a safe and nurturing environment. Today, he utilizes his talents to advocate for refugee rights and works towards making a difference in the world.

The Extraordinary Impact

Ali's story is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the resilience of young refugees. His harrowing escape from Afghanistan and subsequent journey exemplify the courage and determination that lie within us all.

Through his art, Ali has become a voice for the voiceless, inspired countless individuals, and shed light on the challenges faced by refugees worldwide. He serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that compassion and empathy can change lives.

A gripping, inspiring, and eye-opening memoir of fortitude and survival—of a twelve-year-old boy’s traumatic flight from Afghanistan to the West—that puts a face to one of the most shocking and devastating humanitarian crises of our time.

“To risk my life had to mean something. Otherwise what was it all for?”

In 2006, after his father was killed, Gulwali Passarlay was caught between the Taliban who wanted to recruit him, and the Americans who wanted to use him. To protect her son, Gulwali’s mother sent him away. The search for safety would lead the twelve-year-old across eight countries, from the mountains of eastern Afghanistan through Iran and Europe to Britain. Over the course of twelve harrowing months, Gulwali endured imprisonment, hunger, cruelty, brutality, loneliness, and terror—and nearly drowned crossing the Mediterranean Sea. Eventually granted asylum in England, Gulwali was sent to a good school, learned English, won a place at a top university, and was chosen to help carry the Olympic Torch in the 2012 London Games.

In The Lightless Sky, Gulwali recalls his remarkable experience and offers a firsthand look at one of the most pressing issues of our time: the modern refugee crisis—the worst displacement of millions of men, women, and children in generations. Few, like Gulwali, make it to a country that offers the chance of freedom and opportunity. A celebration of courage and determination, The Lightless Sky is a poignant account of an exceptional human being who is today an ardent advocate of democracy—and a reminder of our responsibilities to those caught in terrifying and often deadly circumstances beyond their control.
