In the annals of American history, some names stand tall and resonate through the ages – Washington, Jefferson, Franklin. These esteemed figures are recognized as the architects of a nation that broke free from the shackles of tyranny. However, there exists a group of forgotten founders whose voices have been consigned to obscurity, their names lost in the sands of time. These unsung heroes fought not only against British rule but also against the rise of big government in the newly formed United States, and their stories deserve to be remembered and celebrated.

The Birth of a Nation:

When we think of the American Revolution, we often conjure images of courageous colonists defying the might of the British Empire. But amidst the turmoil of that era, a fierce debate raged among those who sought independence – those who believed that liberty could only be preserved by limiting the reach of government.

Many have overlooked the likes of George Mason, a prominent Virginian statesman who staunchly advocated for individual rights. Mason's tireless efforts culminated in the Virginia Declaration of Rights, a document that inspired the subsequent Bill of Rights in the US Constitution. Through his writings and speeches, Mason made it clear that a government's power must be restricted to prevent encroachment upon the people's liberties.

Elbridge Gerry, the forgotten founder from Massachusetts, was another vocal opponent of big government. Serving as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, Gerry played a crucial role in shaping the new nation's governance. Despite initially refusing to sign the Constitution due to its lack of a Bill of Rights, he eventually acknowledged its necessity for protecting individual freedoms.

Rise of Big Government:

The first few decades after independence saw the emergence of a strong central government – one that began to encroach upon the very liberties fought for during the revolution. While the intentions may have been noble, the principles of limited government were quickly eroded.

One of the pivotal turning points in the struggle against big government was ignited by The Whiskey Rebellion. Originating in western Pennsylvania, this uprising arose from the resentment towards an exorbitant tax imposed on whiskey production. Founding fathers such as John Neville and David Bradford saw this as a clear infringement on individual rights and rallied their communities against this overreach of governmental power.

Similarly, the battle against big government extended beyond the realm of taxation. The Alien and Sedition Acts, passed during John Adams' presidency, aimed to stifle dissent and restrict immigration. Figures like John Taylor of Caroline vocally opposed these acts, arguing that they went against the very principles of the American Revolution, which sought to champion individual liberty.

The Forgotten Fighters:

While the names of Mason, Gerry, Neville, and Bradford may not be as instantly recognizable as their better-known counterparts, their impact on the trajectory of American history cannot be understated. They were instrumental in preserving the ideals of limited government and individual liberty – ideals that formed the bedrock upon which America was built.

Despite their efforts, the rise of big government continued, propelled by shifting societal and economic factors. Over time, the relentless pursuit of unchecked power began to overshadow the principles of liberty that had once animated the nation's founders. Yet, these forgotten fighters had sown seeds of resistance, which would continue to bear fruit throughout American history.

Rediscovering Their Legacy:

It is crucial to examine the forgotten founders' fight against big government today, as America grapples with the challenges of the modern world. Their commitment to individual liberty serves as a reminder that the struggle against encroaching government power is a timeless one.

By shedding light on their stories, we honor the forgotten founders and remind ourselves of the importance of maintaining a delicate balance between societal order and personal freedom. Their narratives inspire us to question authority, demand accountability, and safeguard the ideals upon which our nation was built.

As we celebrate the historic figures who shaped the United States, let us also extend our appreciation to those unsung heroes who dared to defy big government, striving for a nation that values individual freedoms above all.

Join us on this journey of rediscovery as we unveil the untold stories and extraordinary valor of the forgotten founders who fought big government.

Remember their names. Remember their legacy. Remember their fight for freedom.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Some of America’s most important founders have been erased from our history books. In the fight to restore the true meaning of the Constitution, their stories must be told.

In the earliest days of our nation, a handful of unsung heroes—including women, slaves, and an Iroquois chief—made crucial contributions to our republic. They pioneered the ideas that led to the Bill of Rights, the separation of powers, and the abolition of slavery. Yet, their faces haven’t been printed on our currency or carved into any cliffs. Instead, they were marginalized, silenced, or forgotten—sometimes by an accident of history, sometimes by design.

In the thick of the debates over the Constitution, some founders warned about the dangers of giving too much power to the central government. Though they did not win every battle, these anti-Federalists and their allies managed to insert a system of checks and balances to protect the people from an intrusive federal government. Other forgotten figures were not politicians themselves, but by their thoughts and actions influenced America’s story. Yet successive generations have forgotten their message, leading to the creation of a vast federal bureaucracy that our founders would not recognize and did not want.

Senator Mike Lee, one of the most consistent and impassioned opponents of an abusive federal government, tells the story of liberty’s forgotten heroes. In these pages, you’ll learn the true stories of founders such as...

• Aaron Burr who is depicted in the popular musical Hamilton and in history books as a villain, but in reality was a far more complicated figure who fought the abuse of executive power.

• Mercy Otis Warren, one of the most prominent female writers in the Revolution and a protégé of John Adams, who engaged in vigorous debates against the encroachment of federal power and ultimately broke with Adams over her fears of the Constitution.

• Canasatego, an Iroquois chief whose words taught Benjamin Franklin the basic principles behind the separation of powers.

The popular movement that swept Republicans into power in 2010 and 2016 was led by Americans who rediscovered the majesty of the Constitution and knew the stories of Hamilton, Madison, and Washington. But we should also know the names of the contrarians who argued against them and who have been written out of history. If we knew of the heroic fights of these lost founders, we’d never have ended up with a government too big, too powerful, and too unresponsive to its citizens. The good news is that it’s not too late to rememberand to return to our first principles. Restoring the memory of these lost individuals will strike a crippling blow against big government.
