In today's fast-paced world, where information is readily available at our fingertips, journalism plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion and holding those in power accountable. Journalists, particularly editors, have a unique vantage point from which they witness the inner workings of political systems and the corridors of power.

Being an editor in the world of journalism can be an exhilarating journey. It is a role that involves being at the forefront, both in terms of news coverage and decision-making. Editors are tasked with making critical choices about which stories to prioritize, how to present them, and what impact they will have on the public discourse.

One of the most challenging aspects of being an editor lies in navigating the delicate balance between serving the public's right to know and respecting ethical boundaries. Editors constantly face the dilemma of exposing powerful individuals and institutions while ensuring fair and unbiased reporting. It is a tightrope walk that requires a keen understanding of the media landscape and the ramifications of their editorial decisions.

The corridors of power are often rife with secrecy, intrigue, and manipulation. Editors find themselves in the midst of this complex web of political actors, lobbyists, and power brokers. Their ability to decipher the true motivations behind the actions of politicians is crucial in presenting an accurate and informed picture to the public.

Editors frequently interact with high-ranking officials, attending press conferences, briefings, and exclusive meetings. These engagements provide them with valuable insights and access to information that the general public might not have. It is through these interactions that editors gain a deeper understanding of the decision-making processes that shape the political landscape.

The responsibility of an editor goes beyond merely reporting the news; they are often responsible for analyzing and contextualizing complex issues. They must distill complicated policy matters into digestible pieces for the general public, ensuring that readers are well-informed and capable of making their own judgments.

Moreover, editors face an ever-increasing pressure to adapt to the changing media landscape. With the rise of social media and citizen journalism, traditional news outlets no longer hold a monopoly over the dissemination of information. Editors must now also contend with navigating the world of online journalism, ensuring that their publications stay relevant and continue to reach a wide audience.

Despite the challenges, being an editor can be immensely rewarding. The ability to have a direct impact on public discourse and hold powerful individuals accountable is a privilege that not many professions afford. Editors have the opportunity to shape conversations, spark important debates, and ultimately contribute to the betterment of society.

However, the path to becoming an editor is not an easy one. It requires years of dedication, experience, and a deep passion for journalism. Editors often start their careers as reporters, working their way up through the ranks, honing their skills, and developing their unique voice.

In , the role of an editor in the corridors of power is a multifaceted and important one. They are the gatekeepers of information, responsible for shaping public opinion and providing a voice to the voiceless. It is a position that requires integrity, ethical decision-making, and an unwavering commitment to journalistic principles. The inside story of an editor in the corridors of power is a tale of responsibility, accountability, and the pursuit of truth.

Lifting the veil on the inner workings of democratic governance in South Africa after a lifetime in journalism … a first-hand account of how a newspaper editor from apartheid days ends up advising in the highest office in the land.
Tony Heard, former Editor of the Cape Times, describes his decade in the Presidency as a special adviser, and a dozen years elsewhere in government.
He interacts with the South African democracy’s first two presidents, Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, and joins their entourages on two unforgettable state visits to the UK. He sees how Mandela sets about unifying the nation, managing to be conciliatory yet principled, forgiving yet never forgetting.
He witnesses how Mbeki grapples with Zimbabwe's obdurate Robert Mugabe, and describes how Mbeki's perplexing stance on HIV/Aids puts the Presidency under heavy pressure.
Heard describes an extraordinary ambush in his office by an eccentric ex-Minister of Health, and a Presidency in ferment during historic events such as the extra-constitutional ousting of Mbeki.
Heard is not one of the punditocracy. His book is no academic treatise nor secondhand history. In popular style, seeing humour as well as error and success, Heard tells what it was like working in the Presidency. He looks to a better future under Cyril Ramaphosa, after the wreckage left behind by President Jacob Zuma.
