Have you ever wondered what happened to the lost films of the past? Films that were once cherished but have now vanished into thin air, leaving a void in the history of cinema. One such film that has intrigued film enthusiasts for decades is the lost masterpiece directed by Lambert Hillyer and starring George Hackathorne and Lucille Ricksen.

The tale begins in the early 1920s when the film industry was still in its infancy. Lambert Hillyer, a prominent director known for his innovative storytelling techniques, decided to take on a project that would transcend the boundaries of traditional filmmaking. His vision was to create a film that would capture the essence of love, betrayal, and redemption in a way never seen before. And so, the project began.

The casting process was meticulous, with George Hackathorne, a rising star known for his magnetic presence on screen, chosen to portray the male lead. Opposite him, a relatively unknown actress named Lucille Ricksen was selected for the female lead. Hillyer believed that her raw talent and undeniable beauty would bring an added depth to the film.

Months of preparation went into the production, from meticulous set designs to impeccable costume creations. The crew poured their hearts and souls into every aspect, ensuring that no detail was overlooked. The screenplay, written by a talented team of writers, was hailed as a masterpiece even before filming began.

Finally, the day arrived when cameras began rolling. The chemistry between Hackathorne and Ricksen was electrifying, and the performances they delivered were nothing short of extraordinary. Every scene, carefully constructed and expertly executed, brought the story to life in a way that mesmerized audiences.

But fate had a cruel twist in store for this groundbreaking film. As production neared completion, disaster struck. A fire broke out in the storage facility where the film reels were kept, destroying the majority of the footage. The loss was devastating, not only for Hillyer and his cast but for the entire film industry.

For years, film scholars and enthusiasts have searched tirelessly for any remaining fragments of this lost masterpiece. Rumors circulated that a few surviving reels had been salvaged, but their whereabouts remained unknown. The search became a mythical quest, with many doubting whether the film would ever resurface.

However, recent developments have brought new hope to this seemingly impossible task. A small group of dedicated researchers stumbled upon a long-forgotten archive in a dusty corner of an old studio lot. Inside, they discovered a box labeled "Hillyer's Lost Film." The excitement was palpable as they carefully examined its contents.

What they found was beyond their wildest dreams. A significant portion of the film had miraculously survived, including some of the most pivotal and emotionally charged scenes. The researchers were overcome with emotion as they realized the magnitude of their discovery.

Now begins the painstaking process of restoring and preserving the salvaged footage. Archivists, experts in film restoration, are working day and night to bring this lost gem back to life. The dedication and passion of these individuals are essential in ensuring that future generations can experience the magic of this long-lost masterpiece.

As the world anxiously awaits the restoration's completion, appreciation for the film and its director, Lambert Hillyer, is growing. Hollywood director LAMBERT HILLYER made three films in 1924 according to standard reference sources, Those Who Dance, Barbara Frietchie, and Idle Tongues. However, contemporary trade papers and newspapers show that he directed and completed the shooting of another film that year, GOLD HEELS, originally titled CHECKERS, which was never released but remade by Fox under the same title using another director, a new script, and a different cast. Of Hillyer’s film there are reproductions of a few stills and we hear of a preview but the film is lost - not only in the physical sense but it has gone unrecorded in filmographies of the director and of the actors (who included Lucille Ricksen) and in the American Silent Feature Film Database. Set out here is the evidence for Hillyer’s film with some thoughts on possible reasons for its suppression (he was arrested and jailed soon after its completion)
and on his relationship with Thomas Ince.
