Driven by an indomitable spirit and fueled by hope for a better future, Tom embarked on a dangerous journey towards liberty. Taking advantage of the cover provided by the moonlight, he set out on his perilous escape, fully aware that discovery would mean certain death.

The Moonlit Escape

Tom's escape plan involved a meticulously crafted strategy that relied heavily on the natural surroundings and his in-depth knowledge of the plantation's layout. It was under the pale glow of the moon that he made his move, navigating through dense forests, crossing treacherous rivers, and traversing steep hillsides.

During the cold and arduous nights, Tom encountered various dangers, such as tracking dogs, slave catchers, and natural obstacles. However, driven by an unwavering determination, he managed to outsmart his pursuers time and time again, becoming a true master of subterfuge.

The Shot That Changed Everything

One fateful night, while Tom was mere moments away from reaching the safety of an Underground Railroad station, the crack of a gunshot shattered the silence. A bullet pierced through the air, grazing his arm and leaving a painful wound that could have easily proved fatal. Miraculously, Tom resisted the immense pain and continued his treacherous journey.

The gunshot alerted his pursuers, who now closed in on him with renewed determination. It seemed as though his daring escape would come to a tragic end. However, fate smiled upon Tom that night, as a sudden downpour masked his scent, making it nearly impossible for the tracking dogs to follow his trail.

A New Beginning

After several nights of relentless pursuit and near misses, Tom finally arrived at a safe haven, aided by abolitionists who risked their lives for the cause of freedom. In the days that followed, his story spread like wildfire, inspiring hope and admiration among those who heard it.

Tom's extraordinary bravery and indomitable will to escape the chains of oppression cast a bright light on the dark corners of America's history. His story exposed the inherent cruelties of slavery and ignited the flames of change that burned in the hearts of many.

The sensational true story of George Dinning, a freed slave, who in 1899 joined forces with a Confederate war hero in search of justice in the Jim Crow south. “Taut and tense. Inspiring and terrifying in its timelessness.”(Colson Whitehead, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Underground Railroad )

Named a most anticipated book of 2021 by O, The Oprah MagazineNamed a "must-read" by the Chicago Review of Books
One of CNN's most anticipated books of 2021

After moonrise on the cold night of January 21, 1897, a mob of twenty-five white men gathered in a patch of woods near Big Road in southwestern Simpson County, Kentucky. Half carried rifles and shotguns, and a few tucked pistols in their pants. Their target was George Dinning, a freed slave who'd farmed peacefully in the area for 14 years, and who had been wrongfully accused of stealing livestock from a neighboring farm. When the mob began firing through the doors and windows of Dinning's home, he fired back in self-defense, shooting and killing the son of a wealthy Kentucky family.

So began one of the strangest legal episodes in American history — one that ended with Dinning becoming the first Black man in America to win damages after a wrongful murder conviction.

Drawing on a wealth of never-before-published material, bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize finalist Ben Montgomery resurrects this dramatic but largely forgotten story, and the unusual convergence of characters — among them a Confederate war hero-turned-lawyer named Bennett H. Young, Kentucky governor William O'Connell Bradley, and George Dinning himself — that allowed this unlikely story of justice to unfold in a time and place where justice was all too rare.
