The Ingenious Journey
In June 1813, the United States invaded Upper Canada, capturing Fort George in Queenston. Following the capture, U.S. forces occupied the surrounding towns, including Queenston, where Laura Secord resided with her husband and young children.
After overhearing a conversation between American soldiers regarding a planned surprise attack on British troops stationed at Beaver Dams, Secord realized the urgency of the situation. Realizing that the British were unaware of this impending attack, she decided to embark on an arduous and dangerous journey to warn them, despite the potential risks.
Disguised as a harmless countrywoman, Laura Secord set off on an incredible 32-kilometer journey through unknown terrain and hostile territories, braving treacherous conditions and uncertain encounters along the way. She faced the constant threat of being captured by American soldiers but pressed on with determination.
Finally, after over 17 hours of walking, Secord arrived at a British outpost and delivered her crucial warning to Lieutenant James FitzGibbon. Thanks to her detailed account, British troops, along with their indigenous allies, were able to successfully repel the American attack at Beaver Dams, ultimately altering the course of the War of 1812.
The Legacy of Laura Secord
Laura Secord's incredible contributions during the War of 1812 earned her a place in Canadian history as an iconic figure. However, her story did not gain widespread recognition until several decades later. In 1860, Queen Victoria awarded her £100 in recognition of her bravery, a significant sum at the time. And in 1913, a monument featuring Laura Secord was erected in Queenston Heights as a tribute to her remarkable actions.
Today, Laura Secord is celebrated as a national hero in Canada. Her brave act of selflessness showcases the strength and determination of all Canadians who fought during the War of 1812, reminding future generations of the sacrifices made for their freedom and independence.
In the annals of history, many remarkable individuals have been forgotten or overshadowed by others. She had been running, stumbling, walking for sixteen hours. It seemed that every muscle was screaming in pain. She did not even stop to check the new wound. When she reached the top of the hill, she stopped abruptly, trembling at an unexpected sight.
Clusters of tents and groups of men around campfires were silhouetted against the sky.
In Acts of Courage, Connie Brummel Crook dramatizes the life of one of Canada’s most enduring heroines, Laura Secord. From young Laura Ingersoll’s early days in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, amidst the turmoil that followed the American Revolutionary War, the story outlines her father’s difficult decision to move his family to Upper Canada. Laura’s subsequent meeting and courtship
with James Secord is described against the backdrop of homesteading in the Niagara Peninsula and of enduring the imminent threat of American invasion. These first sections of the book provide the background for Laura’s courageous rescue of her husband from the battlefield at Queenston Heights, and her even more amazing trek to warn Col. FitzGibbon of the American’s secret plans to attack the British outpost at Beaver Dams. Laura’s extraordinary life, peopled with characters like Joseph Brant and Col. Fitzgibbon is given even more poignancy and interest by the author’s inventive and surprising characterization of the young FitzGibbon, by her acute eye for historical detail, and through her insights into the character of a young woman whose acts of courage have captured the imagination of generations of young Canadians.
