Are you fascinated by the magic that happens behind the scenes in the entertainment industry? Have you ever wondered how actors fly through the air, appear to have superhuman abilities, or interact with mythical creatures? The answer lies in the world of rigging.

What is Rigging?

In the context of entertainment, rigging refers to the process of creating and controlling the movement or suspension of objects or performers using mechanical devices. It is an essential aspect of various fields such as film, theater, circus, and theme park productions, enabling the realization of incredible stunts, special effects, and awe-inspiring performances.

Rigging Applications

Rigging encompasses a wide range of applications that enhance the overall theatrical experience. Let's explore some of the most common uses:

  • Flying Effects: Remember those breathtaking moments when actors soared through the sky, defying gravity? Rigging systems allow performers to achieve flight, simulating bird-like freedom through wirework or harnesses.
  • Suspension: Have you seen aerial artists gracefully twirling and spinning high above the stage? Rigging supports their weight, ensuring their safety as they perform mesmerizing acrobatics.
  • Stunt Work: Ever wondered how actors convincingly perform daredevil stunts? Rigging techniques like wire rigs, harnesses, and trampolines help create illusions of danger while maintaining the safety of the performers.
  • Special Effects: Explosions, fires, collapsing buildings – all thrilling cinematic effects that require rigging to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
  • Puppetry & Animatronics: From larger-than-life creatures to lifelike puppets, rigging plays a vital role in bringing inanimate objects to life, allowing them to move, talk, and interact with actors.

Rigging Techniques

Rigging techniques vary depending on the specific application and desired effect. Here are some commonly used techniques:

  1. Wire Rigs: Thin steel wires or cables are used to suspend objects or performers in mid-air, providing the illusion of flight or weightlessness. This technique is extensively employed in superhero movies to create dynamic action sequences.
  2. Harnesses: Actors wear specialized harnesses or rigs that distribute their weight, allowing them to perform aerial acrobatics safely. Harnesses provide support while maintaining flexibility and freedom of movement.
  3. Trampolines: Used primarily in stunt work, trampolines enable performers to execute highly impressive jumps, flips, and falls while minimizing the risk of injuries.
  4. Counterweights: These systems involve using weights to balance heavy objects or create the illusion of weightlessness. They are commonly used in suspension and flying effects, ensuring precise control of movement.
  5. Pneumatics and Hydraulics: These techniques utilize air pressure or fluid mechanics to move large objects, such as animatronics or set pieces, in a controlled and synchronized manner.

Rigging Standards and Safety

Safety is of utmost importance in the entertainment industry, and rigging is no exception. Rigging professionals adhere to strict standards and regulations to ensure the well-being of performers, crew members, and the audience.

Trained riggers carry out routine inspections of all rigging equipment to detect any signs of wear and tear, malfunctions, or potential hazards. Regular maintenance and thorough safety checks are crucial to prevent accidents and uphold industry standards.

The Role of the Rigger

At the heart of the entertainment industry, riggers are the unsung heroes responsible for bringing the unimaginable to life. They possess a unique skill set that combines knowledge of physics, engineering, and creative problem-solving.

Riggers work closely with directors, designers, and performers to understand their vision and requirements. They design, install, operate, and maintain the rigging systems, ensuring smooth performances and seamless execution of mind-blowing stunts.

Rigging is a transformative force that elevates the entertainment industry to new heights, quite literally. It enables the creation of breathtaking visuals, empowering performers to captivate audiences with their extraordinary abilities. From flying through the air like superheroes to experiencing enchanting creatures up close, the possibilities are endless.

Next time you find yourself immersed in a movie, theater play, or circus performance, take a moment to appreciate the artistry and technical expertise involved in rigging. It is the secret behind the extraordinary, dominating the stage from the shadows.

A leading seller in ETP’s near 60-strong list of titles, Chris Higgs’ An to Rigging in the Entertainment Industry (first published in 2002) has been revised and was issued in its second edition in August 2008. A major part of the revision in this new edition covers Working at Height and the associated regulations.

The book is a practical guide to rigging techniques and practice and also covers thoroughly all safety issues and discusses the implications of working within recommended guidelines and regulations. It sets out to act as an to, in the main, indoor entertainment rigging. It is not intended to be a definitive work and can only serve as a guide to basic rigging. And it does not attempt to explore every technique in detail or to explain the ‘right way’ of doing anything. It does not cover large outdoor stages or tensile structures.

It is, however, a highly informative source of reference and will provide a starting point for further study.
