Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938) first came to prominence in the First World War as a hero of the Gallipoli campaign. After the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in 1918 he led a movement of national resistance to the Allies’ plan to partition its Turkish heartland.
