50 Odd Things To Do In Heritage Site
The world is brimming with beautiful heritage sites that offer a glimpse into the past and showcase the rich history of different cultures. While visiting such destinations is often associated with guided tours and traditional activities, sometimes venturing off the beaten path can lead to some truly unique and memorable experiences. In this article, we will explore 50 odd things you can do in a heritage site, adding a touch of excitement and adventure to your visit.
1. Camping Overnight
Imagine spending a night under the stars surrounded by ancient ruins. Many heritage sites allow visitors to camp overnight, offering a chance to fully immerse yourself in the historical ambiance and be closer to nature.

2. Treasure Hunt
Channel your inner explorer and embark on a treasure hunt within the heritage site. Research the location and history beforehand, and then follow clues or use a metal detector to find hidden artifacts or treasures.
3. Picnic in the Gardens
Enjoy a leisurely picnic in the gardens surrounding a heritage site. Pack a delicious lunch and find a cozy spot to relax and absorb the historical atmosphere while surrounded by beautiful landscapes.
4. Attend a Historical Reenactment
Many heritage sites organize historical reenactments that bring the past to life. Witness battles, costumes, and traditions from different eras, allowing you to step back in time and experience history in a unique way.
5. Geocaching
Engage in the modern treasure hunt known as geocaching. Use GPS coordinates to find hidden containers, or "geocaches," placed in and around heritage sites. It's a fun activity that combines technology with exploration.
6. Nighttime Ghost Tour
For those who appreciate a thrill, some heritage sites offer nighttime ghost tours. Explore eerie hallways and hear chilling stories from the past, making for an unforgettable and spine-tingling experience.
7. Artistic Photography
If you have a passion for photography, use the unique surroundings of a heritage site to capture artistic shots. Experiment with lighting, shadow play, and angles to create stunning images that highlight the site's beauty and history.
8. Wildlife Spotting
Heritage sites often provide a sanctuary for various forms of wildlife. Use binoculars and your observation skills to spot birds, deer, foxes, or other animals that inhabit the area. It's the perfect activity for nature enthusiasts.
9. Stone Skipping
Find a calm body of water within or near the heritage site and test your stone-skipping skills. Challenge your friends or family members and see who can achieve the most skips across the water's surface.
10. Volunteer for Preservation
Many heritage sites rely on volunteers to help with preservation efforts. Contact the site's management and offer your time to assist in gardening, restoration, or organizing events. It's a meaningful way to give back and contribute to maintaining these historical treasures.
These are just a few odd things you can do when visiting a heritage site. The key is to step out of your comfort zone, embrace the unexpected, and explore beyond the typical tourist activities. By doing so, you'll create cherished memories and develop a deeper connection with the fascinating history surrounding you.

The subtitle – 50 Odd Things to do in a Heritage Site (and other places) – says it all. This is a book to take with you next time you visit a historic or heritage site. Its 50 'tactics' are designed to transform the way you look at these places and to get you thinking about the way the industry packages 'heritage'. It's also an interesting and provocative present for parents, grandparents and anyone else who becomes a tourist from time to time.
Although you're encouraged to try them anywhere, many of the tactics work best in a castle, stately home or similar 'attraction'. Among the ideas, you'll find 'Photograph all the stains' and 'Visit heritage sites as if you were a member of a bomb disposal team' – some come with more elaborate instructions but others are as simple as that.
The 'tactics' are interspersed with thoughts and commentaries that appear on blue plaques. These soon reveal that the Pocketbook is just the tip of the iceberg. There's a whole radical philosophy underpinning Phil Smith (Crab Man's) approach to heritage, which has its own 'proper' book (Counter-Tourism: The Handbook).
Counter-Tourism is definitely not about 'sneering at tourism'. While the Pocketbook does collect some of the best 'Heritij' clichés and nonsense (including "Explore England's England" and the fabulous "Hop on one leg in beautiful surroundings"), we're encouraged to "Embrace the cock-ups and the accidental poetry – they may tell us much more... than yet another information board or guide in a three-cornered hat ".
