Emily Murphy Canadian Activist, Writer, And Jurist Emily Murphy: Rebel Christine Mander

When it comes to Canadian women who have made a significant impact on society, Emily Murphy is a name that cannot be overlooked. She was more than just an activist, writer, and jurist - she was a rebel with a cause.

Emily Murphy, born on March 14, 1868, in Cookstown, Ontario, was a woman ahead of her time. While many women in the early 20th century were struggling for basic rights, Emily defied societal expectations and fought relentlessly to make a difference.

Early Life and Education

Emily Murphy was the third of six children in her family. Her father, Isaac Ferguson, was a farmer and politician who instilled in her a strong sense of justice and equality. Emily's mother, Emily Gowan, was a feminist who believed in the importance of education for women.

In 1887, at the age of 19, Emily left her small town and moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where she became a school teacher. It was during her time in Edmonton that she started writing articles for various publications, expressing her thoughts on women's rights and social issues.

Emily eventually left teaching and pursued a career in journalism, becoming the first female political strategist and journalist in Canadian history. Her writing was passionate, persuasive, and thought-provoking, attracting both supporters and critics alike.

The Famous Five

Emily Murphy's most significant contribution to Canadian history came as one of the 'Famous Five.' In 1927, she joined forces with four other women - Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, and Henrietta Muir Edwards - to challenge the Supreme Court of Canada's ruling that women were not "persons" under the law.

The Famous Five's fight for women's rights led to the Persons Case, a groundbreaking legal battle that ultimately resulted in women being recognized as "persons" under the law. This landmark decision opened doors for women's participation in politics, paving the way for Emily herself to become the first female magistrate in the British Empire.

Despite facing immense resistance from a male-dominated society, Emily and her comrades stood strong in their conviction that women deserved the same rights and opportunities as men. Their determination and resilience inspired countless women across the country, igniting the flames of a powerful movement that would ultimately lead to significant social change.

Legacy and Impact

Emily Murphy continued to be a fierce advocate for women's rights throughout her life. Her tireless efforts inspired future generations of feminists and activists, leaving a lasting impact on Canadian society.

One of the most significant ways in which Emily's legacy lives on is through her writings. Her book, "The Black Candle," co-authored with her friend Nellie McClung, shed light on the dangers of drug use and played a crucial role in the banning of opium in Canada. Her other notable works, including "Janey Canuck In the West," showcased her keen observations and deep understanding of Canadian society.

In recognition of her remarkable contributions, Emily Murphy was posthumously awarded the Governor General's Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case in 1970. Her statue now stands proudly on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, honoring her as the influential trailblazer she was.

The Rebel Christine Mander

Emily Murphy's rebellious spirit and determined attitude earned her the nickname "The Rebel Christine Mander." Her defiance against societal norms, coupled with her unwavering fight for justice, made her a force to be reckoned with.

However, it's important to note that Emily Murphy's rebellion was not fueled by a desire for personal gain but by her unwavering commitment to equality and fairness. She sought to challenge the status quo and dismantle oppressive systems that held women back.

Emily once said, "I have watched the striving that has gone on under existing conditions, and I know that given fair opportunities, women make good citizens." These words epitomize her belief in the potential of women and her unyielding determination to create a society where women are valued and treated as equals.

The Enduring Inspiration

Emily Murphy's story serves as an enduring inspiration for women worldwide. Her journey from a small-town girl to a renowned activist reminds us of the power that lies within us to bring about change.

Today, as we celebrate the achievements of remarkable women like Emily Murphy, let us not forget the importance of solidarity and collective action. By standing together, we can continue to challenge societal norms, overcome barriers, and create a better future for all.

Emily Murphy may have been a rebel, but she was also an advocate, leader, and trailblazer. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who continue her fight for justice and equality.

In this comprehensive biography, Christine Mander depicts the life and times of Emily Murphy with a refreshing candor and vitality. A true Canadian heroine – pioneering feminism, writer (under the alias Janey Canuck), patriot, mother, anti-drug crusader, first woman magistrate of the British Empire and rebel – Emily Murphy defied conventional labels. To Hell with Women Magistrates, fulminated one court official on her appointment. Her greatest triumph came in 1929 when Lord Chancellor Sankey reversed the Canadian Supreme Court decision by ruling that women are persons under the constitution and therefore eligible for any political office. When Emily Murphy died in 1933, after a long battle with diabetes, her friend and fellow activist Nellie McClung remarked, Mrs. Murphy loved a fight and so far as I know, never turned her back on one.
