Wilson faced his own share of obstacles along the way. Dropping out of high school, he became a voracious reader and self-taught writer. Determined to pursue his passion for storytelling, he began crafting plays that portrayed the lives of ordinary black Americans with authenticity and depth.

The Ten-Play Cycle: A Monumental Achievement

August Wilson's most significant achievement came in the form of his ten-play cycle, collectively known as "The Pittsburgh Cycle" or "The Century Cycle." Each play explores a different decade of the 20th century, chronicling the African-American experience and creating a comprehensive portrait of the struggles and triumphs within the community.

One of the most iconic works of this cycle is "Fences," which received widespread acclaim and numerous honors, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1987. Through powerful storytelling, Wilson tackled the themes of racial inequality, family dynamics, and the pursuit of dreams. The play became a cultural touchstone, capturing the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide.

A celebration of August Wilson’s journey from a child in Pittsburgh to one of America’s greatest playwrights

August Wilson (1945–2005) was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who had a particular talent for capturing the authentic, everyday voice of Black Americans. As a child, he read off soup cans and cereal boxes, and when his mother brought him to the library, his whole world opened up. After facing intense prejudice at school from both students and some teachers, August dropped out. However, he continued reading and educating himself independently. He felt that if he could read about it, then he could teach himself anything and accomplish anything. Like many of his plays,
Feed Your Mind is told in two acts, revealing how Wilson grew up to be one of the most influential American playwrights. The book includes an author’s note, a timeline of August Wilson’s life, a list of Wilson’s plays, and a bibliography.
