When we talk about war heroes and legendary survivors, names like John McCain, Audie Murphy, or Chris Kyle often come to mind. However, there is one extraordinary individual whose story remains largely untold - Ron Kovic, the hurricane of courage who defied all odds.

The Early Years

Born on July 4, 1946, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, Ron Kovic grew up in a patriotic and deeply patriotic family. Raised with a strong sense of duty and love for his country, it was only natural for him to enlist in the United States Marine Corps.

It was during the Vietnam War that Kovic's life changed forever. In 1968, at the age of 22, he was deployed to Vietnam, eagerly embracing his duty to fight for the ideals he believed in.

A Twist of Fate

On January 20, 1968, the day that would forever be etched into Kovic's mind, tragedy struck. In the heat of battle, he was inadvertently shot by one of his own comrades, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down.

This devastating incident dramatically altered the course of Kovic's life. From a promising young soldier with dreams of glory, he suddenly found himself confined to a wheelchair, confronting the harsh realities of war.

The Birth of Hurricane Street

After returning from Vietnam, Kovic faced numerous physical and emotional challenges. Frustration and anger prompted him to start penning his memoir - a heartbreaking yet inspiring account of his experiences on the battlefield and the aftermath of his injury.

Published in 1976, "Hurricane Street" provided a unique perspective on the war, shedding light on the physical and moral struggles faced by veterans. It exposed the harsh realities of war, serving as a voice for those who were often forgotten.

An Advocate for Peace

Kovic's memoir not only resonated with fellow veterans but also caught the attention of the wider society. His detailed account of the profound physical and emotional trauma endured by soldiers challenged the romanticized notions of war prevalent at the time.

A vocal advocate for peace, Kovic became an influential figure in the anti-war movement of the 1970s. He participated in protests against the war, delivering powerful speeches that moved hearts and minds.

Beyond Hurricane Street

While Hurricane Street marked a significant milestone in Kovic's life, his journey did not end there. He devoted himself to helping fellow veterans, co-founding the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) organization in 1978.

Through the VVA, Kovic worked tirelessly to improve the lives of veterans, advocating for their rights and supporting their transition back into civilian life. His efforts helped bring attention to the challenges faced by those who had served in the Vietnam War and ensured they received the recognition and care they deserved.

A Legacy of Resilience

Ron Kovic's story is one of resilience, strength, and the unwavering pursuit of justice. His life is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome even the most difficult circumstances.

Today, as Hurricane Street continues to captivate readers with its raw honesty and powerful storytelling, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by thousands of soldiers like Kovic and the importance of understanding and supporting our veterans.

The author of Born on the Fourth of July delivers “a harrowing, poignant telling of the American Veteran’s Movement and its members’ struggles” (Manhattan Book Review).

In the spring of 1974, as the last American troops were being pulled out of Vietnam, Ron Kovic and a small group of other severely injured veterans in a California VA hospital launched the American Veterans Movement. In a phenomenal feat of political organizing, Kovic corralled his fellow AVM members into staging a sit-in, and then a hunger strike, in the Los Angeles office of Senator Alan Cranston, demanding better treatment of injured and disabled veterans.

This was a short-lived and chaotic but ultimately successful movement to improve the deplorable conditions in VA hospitals across the country. Hurricane Street is their story—one that resonates deeply today—told by Kovic in the passionate and brutally honest style that led to over one million sales of Born on the Fourth of July.

“Another raw exposé on the cost of war . . . The book is an unflinching anti-war declaration, written in blood and the sweat of too many haunted nights by a Vietnam Marine Corps sergeant who later opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.” —Los Angeles Times

“A deeply moving account of the struggle of Vietnam veterans to hold politicians accountable to the maimed warriors they sent into harm’s way and then abandoned.” —Robert Scheer, author of They Know Everything About You

“An impassioned and timely memoir about the 1974 American Veterans Movement that will strike a chord with veterans and their families today.” —Publishers Weekly, Top 10 Pick for Spring 2016
