Year On The Ground In Iraq: An Unforgettable Journey
![Jese Leos](https://epilogueepic.com/author/chadwick-powell.jpg)
When I first embarked on my year-long journey in Iraq, I had no idea of the life-changing experiences that awaited me. What started as a curious desire to understand a nation plagued by conflict, turned into an unforgettable adventure that would forever shape my perspective.
As a war correspondent, I had covered several conflict zones in my career, but Iraq posed unique challenges and opportunities. The country has a rich history, a diverse culture, and a resilient people who have endured years of turmoil. It was a place where stories needed to be told, and I was determined to be their voice.
Living Amongst the Locals
From the moment I stepped foot on Iraqi soil, I was captivated by the warmth and hospitality of the local population. Despite the hardships they faced, their spirit remained unbroken. I decided to immerse myself in the communities, living amongst the locals to better understand their daily struggles and aspirations.

Living in humble dwellings, eating traditional meals, and participating in everyday activities allowed me to forge deep connections with the people. I listened to stories of loss and resilience, witnessed the strength of families torn apart by conflict, and celebrated milestones that showcased the indomitable human spirit.
Exploring the Rich History
As a history enthusiast, I was thrilled to explore the ancient sites and cultural treasures that Iraq had to offer. From the architectural marvels of Babylon and Nineveh to the mesmerizing ruins of Palmyra, every step I took reminded me of the rich civilization that thrived in this land thousands of years ago.
Escorting me through the historical sites, local archaeologists shared their knowledge and passion, adding extra layers of depth to my experiences. Each artifact I held in my hands felt like a time machine, transporting me to a different era. I was walking in the footsteps of kings, artists, and philosophers, gaining a profound understanding of the interconnectedness of our history.
Witnessing the Resilience
Despite the challenges that Iraq faced, I couldn't help but notice the unwavering resilience of its people. From bustling markets filled with entrepreneurs rebuilding their businesses to schools where children eagerly sought education amidst adversity, the determination to rebuild and move forward was evident at every turn.
I had the privilege of meeting individuals who had lost everything, yet refused to give up. The stories of these unsung heroes resonated deeply within me and served as a constant reminder of the strength of the human spirit. Their unwavering hope for a better future touched my heart and fueled my determination to share their tales with the world.
A Nation Rebuilding Itself
As the year progressed, I witnessed the gradual transformation of Iraq. Communities that were once divided along sectarian lines were coming together to rebuild their nation. Schools, hospitals, and infrastructure were being reconstructed, symbolizing a collective hope for a brighter tomorrow.
The scars of war were still visible, but amidst the rubble, signs of progress were emerging. I had the opportunity to witness the resilience of an entire nation as it rose from the ashes, determined to create a future that would not be defined by its past.
Returning Home, Forever Changed
As my year on the ground in Iraq drew to a close, I knew I was a different person than when I had first arrived. The stories I had gathered, the friendships I had forged, and the experiences I had lived through had left an indelible mark on my soul.
I had witnessed the devastation of war, but also the strength of the human spirit. Iraq had shown me that even in the darkest of times, hope can prevail, and ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. As I returned home, I took with me a newfound appreciation for life and a renewed commitment to continue telling stories that matter.
The Journey Continues
My year on the ground in Iraq was an unforgettable journey that expanded my horizons, challenged my perceptions, and etched memories that I will carry with me forever. As I look back on my time there, I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of a nation's story of struggle and resilience.
The journey may have ended, but my commitment to shining a light on untold stories remains stronger than ever. I hope that through my words, I can continue to bridge the gaps between nations, fostering understanding and empathy, and reminding the world of the extraordinary journeys that unfold in the most unexpected places.

This is not your father's war
This is Iraq, where a soldier's first duty is reinforcing his Humvee with sheet metal and sand bags. Or, in the absence of plumbing, burning barrels of human waste. Where any dead dog on the side of the road might be concealing an insurgent's bomb and anyone could be the enemy.
At age 17, Jason Christopher Hartley joined the Army National Guard. Thirteen years later, he is called to active duty, to serve in Iraq. Sent to a town called Ad Dujayl, made notorious by Saddam Hussein's 1982 massacre, Hartley is thrust into the center of America's war against terrorism. This is his story.
"If you are distrustful of the media and want to know exactly what's going on in Iraq, you'll have to pray for divine enlightenment, because only god knows what the hell is going on over here. However, if you want to know how it feels to be a soldier in Iraq, to hear something honest and raw, that I can help you with."
Sometimes profane, often poignant, and always nakedly candid, Just Another Soldier takes the reader past the images seen on CNN and the nightly news, into the day to day reality of life on the ground as an infantryman, attached to the 1st Division, in the first war of the 21st century. From the adrenaline rush of storming a suspected insurgent's house, to the sheer boredom of down time on the base, to the horror of dead civilians, Hartley examines his role as a man, as a soldier and as an American on foreign soil. His quest to discover the balance between his compassionate side and his baser instincts, results in a searing portrait of today's Army and a remarkable personal narrative written in a fresh and exciting new voice. Just Another Soldier is more than a war story; it delivers an intimate look at a generation of young men and women on the front lines of American policy.
Whether you're for or against the war in Iraq, this is essential reading.
