In an unjust twist of fate, I found myself entangled within the merciless clutches of a legal battle that not only stripped me of my freedom but also kept me confined within the cold, harsh walls of prison for a staggering 26 years. As I reflect upon my arduous journey, it becomes glaringly evident that the very system in place to ensure justice and fairness failed me in unimaginable ways.

The account of my wrongful conviction dates back to a seemingly ordinary afternoon in the year 1994. Unbeknownst to me, this would mark the beginning of an endless nightmare that would span more than two and a half decades. In a cruel twist of fate, I found myself accused of a heinous crime I had not committed.

Entering the courtroom for the first time, my mind filled with hope and optimism as I believed in the integrity of the justice system. However, little did I know that legal ethics would be cast aside, overshadowed by the desire to secure a conviction at any cost.

The first hurdle I encountered was the one-sided investigation, driven by a rush to judgment rather than an impartial examination of the evidence. The prosecution seemed determined to ignore any leads or facts that did not align with their predetermined narrative. Critical pieces of evidence were omitted or dismissed, creating a distorted and biased representation of the truth.

Throughout the trial, my defense attorney faced several ethical dilemmas. Overwhelmed with maintaining a reputation and a heavy caseload, their commitment to ensuring a fair trial was compromised. I pleaded for justice, urging my attorney to advocate for my innocence with fervor and dedication. Nonetheless, their actions were strained and seemingly indifferent, as if I were just another file on a desk.

Further exacerbating the situation was the media frenzy surrounding my case. Sensational headlines and misinformation spread like wildfire, fueling public outrage and painting a damning portrait of my character. The press became judge, jury, and executioner, feeding into the public's insatiable thirst for drama and spectacle.

As years turned into decades, my faith in the legal system waned. Feeling abandoned and betrayed, I languished behind prison bars, fighting to maintain my sanity amidst an unjust reality. And yet, a glimmer of hope persisted within me.

After relentless efforts by a team of dedicated lawyers, I finally found solace in the realization that my case was not entirely forgotten. Their determination to uncover the truth, both in the courtroom and outside its confines, breathed new life into my fight for freedom.

Driven by an unwavering pursuit of justice, they painstakingly analyzed every aspect of my case, unraveling the threads of deception that had ensnared me for far too long. Their unwavering commitment to ethically representing their clients has become a beacon of hope amidst the darkness.

Overturning the injustice that had plagued me for a quarter of a century was no easy task. The tangled web of legal complexities, coupled with institutional resistance, presented numerous obstacles. However, by adhering to the highest ethical standards, my legal team exposed the flaws in the system and shed light on the truth, subsequently leading to my exoneration.

Now, as I share my story with you, I implore you to reflect upon the dangers that lie within a legal system tainted by unethical practices. The ramifications are not limited to the individual wrongfully accused, but permeate society as a whole. It is a stark reminder that our fight for justice must be unwavering, and our commitment to legal ethics must transcend personal gain or reputation.

Let my harrowing journey serve as a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of ethical representation, and the collective responsibility we bear in upholding justice for all. Together, we can ensure that no others fall victim to the pitfalls of a flawed legal system that prioritizes conviction rates over truth and fairness.

“A shocking tale of wrongful conviction . . . that brings general conditions into cruelly sharp focus.” —Kirkus Reviews

Justice Failed is the story of Alton Logan, an African American man who served twenty–six years in prison for a murder he did not commit. In 1983, Logan was falsely convicted of fatally shooting an off–duty Cook County corrections officer, Lloyd M. Wickliffe, at a Chicago–area McDonald’s, and sentenced to life in prison. While serving time for unrelated charges, Andrew Wilson—the true murderer—admitted his guilt to his own lawyers, Dale Coventry and Jamie Kunz. However, bound by the legal code of ethics known as the absolutism of client–attorney privilege, Coventry and Kunz could not take action. Instead, they signed an affidavit proclaiming Logan’s innocence and locked the document in a hidden strong box. It wasn’t until after Wilson’s death in 2007 that his lawyers were able to come forward with the evidence that would eventually set Alton Logan free after twenty–six years in prison.

Written in collaboration with veteran journalist Berl Falbaum, Justice Failed explores the sharp divide that exists between commonsense morality—an innocent man should be free—and the rigid ethics of the law that superseded that morality. Throughout the book, in–depth interviews and legal analyses give way to Alton Logan himself as he tells his own story, from his childhood in Chicago to the devastating impact that the loss of a quarter century has had on his life—he entered prison at twenty–eight years of age, and was released at fifty–five.
