The Decision to Emigrate
Leaving one's home country is never an easy decision. However, sometimes circumstances push us to take bold steps towards a better future. Growing up in a developing country, I witnessed the struggle and limited opportunities available for individuals like me. My dream of a brighter future motivated me to explore the possibilities beyond my borders.

Overcoming the Obstacles
Emigrating to the United States may sound like a dream come true, but the road to achieving it is often filled with obstacles. First and foremost, there was the daunting visa application process. The extensive paperwork, interviews, and uncertainty can easily discourage even the most resilient individuals.
Perseverance and patience became my closest companions during this phase. Endless hours were spent gathering documents, filling out forms, and attending interviews. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, alternating between hope and anxiety, as I awaited the verdict on my visa application.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the day arrived when I received the approval for my visa. I was elated, but this was just the beginning of my journey.
Starting Anew
Arriving in the United States, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. Everything was new and unfamiliar, from the language to the culture. However, I quickly realized that these obstacles were nothing compared to the endless opportunities that awaited.
Establishing a new life in a foreign country comes with its fair share of challenges. I had to learn the language proficiently, adapt to the cultural norms, and understand the educational and professional systems. It wasn't always easy, but my determination and eagerness to succeed kept me going.
The American Dream
The concept of the American Dream has long captivated individuals around the world. It symbolizes the belief that with hard work, dedication, and the right opportunities, anyone can achieve success and a better life.
As I pursued my dream in the United States, I witnessed firsthand the power of this vision. The country's entrepreneurial spirit, innovative mindset, and immense support for business ventures allowed me to explore various opportunities. I seized the chance to further my education and dedicated myself to building a successful career.
With each passing year, I made significant strides towards achieving my version of the American Dream. I started a thriving business, earned advanced degrees, and became an active member of my local community. The United States truly lived up to its reputation, providing a platform for growth and limitless possibilities.
As I reflect on my journey from emigration to achieving the American Dream, I realize that it was the combination of determination, resilience, and unwavering belief in oneself that propelled me forward. Emigrating to a foreign country may seem like a daunting feat, but it can also be the key to unlocking a world of opportunities.
If you yearn for a change, dream of a better life, and are willing to put in the effort, emigration might be the path that leads you to the American Dream. It won't be easy, and obstacles will undoubtedly arise, but remember that from hardships comes growth. With perseverance and dedication, you too can create a fulfilling future in the land of opportunities.

My Emigration to the United States and Achieving the American Dream chronicles how Glenn Chelliah achieved the American dream through hard work, his Catholic faith, and the kindness of many American benefactors.
Glenn grew up in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) when the country was still under British occupation in the 1940s and 1950s. He was one of thirteen children in his family. Glenn’s family had strong connections to their native Tamil ancestors, but they were also deeply Catholic and identified with the Western culture brought to the island by the British in the 1800s. Glenn’s faith and English education were reasons he was able to attend St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia in the 1970s.
Despite arriving with only eight dollars in his pocket, Glenn established himself in the United States quickly, becoming a citizen in 1981, starting a family, and achieving professional success in the pharmaceutical industry. He also worked to bring his mother and siblings to the United States from Ceylon when the country was facing political upheaval.
This is the story of the many blessings Glenn found in America, detailing the obstacles he overcame as an ambitious young man seeking a better life in a country he had dreamed of since he was a teenager.
