Have you ever experienced a journey so terrifying, so haunting, that it forever changed your perception of the world? Let me take you on a spine-chilling adventure through the darkest corners of my existence, a journey where fear lurked at every turn and nightmares became a reality.

It all began on a cold, moonlit night in the countryside. I was driving down a desolate road, the wind howling like a banshee, when suddenly my car broke down. Stranded in the middle of nowhere, I decided to venture into the nearby forest in search of help.

The forest was an eerie place, with trees looming overhead like twisted creatures from a nightmare. The silence was deafening, broken only by the occasional rustling of leaves. As I walked deeper into the darkness, an unsettling feeling crept over me, as if I was being watched by unseen eyes.

With each step, the sense of dread intensified. Shadows danced around me, playing tricks on my mind. The sound of my own heartbeat echoed in my ears, drowning out any rational thoughts. Panic consumed me, but I had no choice but to continue, hoping to find a way out of this nightmare.

As I stumbled through the undergrowth, I came across a dilapidated cabin hidden among the trees. It was a haunting sight, its ancient timbers groaning under the weight of time. Without hesitation, I pushed open the creaking door, desperately seeking refuge from the encroaching darkness.

Inside, the cabin was a whirlwind of decay and despair. Dust coated every surface, and cobwebs hung like a twisted tapestry. The air was heavy with the stench of rot and decay. It was clear that this place had long been abandoned, left to the whims of nature and forgotten by time.

But something lurked within those decaying walls. A sinister presence that sent shivers down my spine. It seemed as though the very essence of evil had taken residence here. I could feel its cold breath on my neck, its malevolence seeping into my soul.

I knew I had to escape, to leave this cursed place behind, but the cabin held me in its clutches. Every door I tried was locked tight, trapping me in a maze of nightmares. Desperation filled my veins as I frantically searched for a way out, my mind teetering on the edge of madness.

Just when all hope seemed lost, I discovered a hidden passageway concealed behind a forgotten painting. It was a narrow corridor, barely wide enough to squeeze through, but it offered a glimmer of salvation. With trembling hands, I ventured into the darkness, aware that danger lurked around every corner.

The passageway twisted and turned, its walls sweating with the lingering fear of those who had gone before me. It felt like an eternity as I navigated the labyrinthine maze, my heart pounding in my chest, my breath shallow and ragged. Yet, I pressed on, driven by an unyielding determination to escape the horrors that sought to claim me.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I emerged from the oppressive darkness, blinking in the blinding sunlight. I had survived the horrors that awaited me, emerging scarred but stronger. The world around me seemed brighter, as if the shadows of the past had lifted, revealing a new dawn.

This journey through the horror had forever changed me. It taught me the depths of my courage and the true strength of the human spirit. Sometimes we must face the darkest corners of our existence to truly appreciate the light.

So, dear reader, I leave you with this cautionary tale. Beware the allure of the unknown, for it may lead you on a journey through the horror like nothing you've ever experienced before. But fear not, for within the darkness lies the opportunity for growth and resilience. Embrace the journey, but always remember to hold onto hope, for it is the beacon that guides us through the darkest of nights.

My Lost Childhood is a memoir describing immeasurable suffering the author went through in his early childhood. In the late 1980s, the Islamic government began to systematically torture and kill Southern Sudanese families, burn their villages, and enslave young boys and girls. As a result, an approximately, as numbers are largely unknown and only an estimate, 27,000 plus boys from Southern tribes were forced to flee from their homes. Traveling naked and barefoot, they sought refuge in neighboring Fugnido, Ethiopia, where a few years later they were forced to flee yet another civil war. Returning to Sudan, the Islamic government forced them to travel for another five months, ultimately arriving in Kakuma, Kenya, after four years of unthinkable hardship and walking over thousands of miles naked, barefoot, and ailing from starvation, dehydration, and diseases. Many boys perished along the way and their numbers shrank into few thousands.

Abraham Deng Ater, separated from his family in 1987, is one of approximately 3,800 boys now known as the Lost Boys of Sudan. He left Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya after several years of massive suffering and was granted refuge in the U.S. in 2001. Many Lost Boys including Abraham have since become U.S. citizens and have continued to pursue their education. Thousands more have also been granted refuge elsewhere and are scattered around the globe.
