Beautiful Sunset Over Yangon City Skyline Our Home In Myanmar: Four Years In Yangon

Living abroad can be an exciting and transformative experience, especially when it involves immersing yourself in a different culture. For the past four years, my family and I have called Yangon, Myanmar, our home. This bustling city, with its rich history and vibrant atmosphere, has provided us with countless unforgettable memories and a deeper understanding of the world.

The Magic of Yangon

Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar and its economic and cultural hub. Upon arrival, we were immediately captivated by the city's unique charm. The golden spires of the Shwedagon Pagoda glistening in the sunset, the bustling open-air markets filled with colorful textiles and aromatic street food, and the smiling faces of the locals all contributed to the magic of Yangon. It is a city that beautifully blends tradition and modernity, where ancient temples stand tall amidst modern skyscrapers.

Our Home Away From Home

Finding a place to call home in Yangon was an adventure in itself. The city offers a wide range of housing options, from modern apartments in downtown areas to traditional Burmese houses in peaceful suburbs. We opted for a charming apartment nestled in the heart of downtown, allowing us to truly experience the city's vibrant rhythm.

Our apartment offered a stunning view of Yangon's skyline, especially during the enchanting sunsets. It quickly became our favorite spot to unwind after a long day of exploring. From sipping traditional Burmese tea on our balcony to simply gazing at the city lights, our apartment provided us with a sense of tranquility amidst the lively surroundings.

Embracing the Local Culture

Traditional Burmese Dance Performance Our Home In Myanmar: Four Years In Yangon

One of the most rewarding aspects of living in Yangon was the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture. Myanmar is known for its rich cultural heritage, and we were lucky to witness traditional Burmese dance performances, festivals, and religious ceremonies throughout the year.

The locals were incredibly welcoming and always eager to share their customs and traditions with us. We enthusiastically took part in cooking classes, learning how to prepare famous Burmese dishes such as Mohinga and Tea Leaf Salad. It was not just about the food, but also about connecting with the community and gaining a deeper appreciation for their way of life.

Exploring Myanmar's Gems

Living in Yangon also allowed us to explore the breathtaking attractions that Myanmar has to offer. From ancient temples such as Bagan's mesmerizing pagodas to the serene beauty of Inle Lake, there was no shortage of remarkable places to visit.

Inle Lake's Floating Gardens And Traditional Fisherman Our Home In Myanmar: Four Years In Yangon

One of our most memorable adventures was a visit to Inle Lake. It was awe-inspiring to witness the unique lifestyle of the Intha people, who live in stilted houses and navigate their way through the lake using traditional one-legged rowing techniques. The lake's floating gardens and the vibrant local markets added an extra layer of fascination to this already stunning destination.

Leaving a Piece of Our Hearts

As our time in Yangon draws to a close, we can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia and gratitude. Myanmar has become our second home, and the memories we have made here will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Living in Yangon has taught us the importance of embracing diversity, fostering meaningful connections, and cherishing every moment. It has provided us with a deeper understanding of different cultures and expanded our views of the world.

While we are sad to say goodbye to Our Home in Myanmar after four incredible years, we are filled with gratitude and the excitement of embarking on a new chapter. We will forever be grateful for the experiences and memories made in this beautiful country.

"An honest, detailed, and well-structured account of the personal and political." - Kirkus Reviews

Myanmar: shrouded in mystery, misunderstood and isolated for half a century

After a whirlwind romance in Bangladesh, Australian journalist Jessica Mudditt and her Bangladeshi husband Sherpa arrive in Yangon in 2012, just as the military junta is beginning to relax its ironclad grip on power. It is a high-risk atmosphere; a life riddled with chaos and confusion as much as it is with wonder and excitement. Jessica joins a small team of old-hand expat editors at The Myanmar Times, whose Burmese editor is still languishing in prison.

Whether she is covering a speech by Aung San Suu Kyi, getting dangerously close to cobras, directing cover shoots with Burmese models, or scaling Bagan’s thousand-year-old temples, Jessica is entranced and challenged by a country undergoing rapid change. But as the historic elections of 2015 draw near, it becomes evident that the road to democracy is full of twists, turns and false starts. The couple is blindsided when a rise in militant Buddhism takes a personal turn and challenges their belief that they have found a home in Myanmar.
