Photography is not just for adults! Engaging kids in photography activities can unleash their creativity, develop their observation skills, and introduce them to the world of patterns.

Why Photography?

Photography can be a form of art and self-expression. Giving your child a camera and encouraging them to explore their surroundings helps them learn to observe details and capture unique moments. In addition, understanding patterns in photography can enhance their cognitive abilities and visual perception.

1. Pattern Scavenger Hunt

Create a list of patterns for your child to find. It could be patterns found in nature, architecture, everyday objects, or even patterns created by shadows. Encourage them to capture these patterns with their camera and discuss what they discovered.

2. Shape Exploration

Teach your child about different shapes such as squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles. Then, challenge them to find these shapes within their environment and photograph them. This activity not only enhances their observation skills but also introduces them to geometry.

3. Color Patterns

Take your child on a colorful adventure! Ask them to find and capture different color patterns in their surroundings. It could be a series of red flowers, a rainbow, or even a collection of colorful street art. This activity helps them develop an eye for color coordination.

4. Symmetry in Nature

Exploring symmetry in nature can be both fascinating and calming. Take your child to a garden or park and encourage them to find symmetrical patterns in flowers, leaves, or even reflections in the water. Capturing these symmetrical moments with their camera helps them appreciate the beauty of balance.

5. Shadows as Patterns

Shadows create unique patterns that change throughout the day. Teach your child about the concept of shadows and how they can form beautiful patterns. Encourage them to capture these patterns at different times and experiment with angles and light sources.

6. Contrasting Patterns

Show your child how contrasting patterns can create striking visual effects. Ask them to find and photograph objects or scenes where contrasting patterns are showcased. It could be a zebra crossing, a black and white floor, or even a mosaic artwork.

7. Finding Repetition

Repetition creates a sense of rhythm and harmony in photography. Challenge your child to find repetitive patterns in their surroundings. It could be a row of trees, a series of streetlights, or even waves crashing on the shore. By capturing these repetitions, they enhance their sense of rhythm in visual arts.

8. Abstract Patterns

Encourage your child to experiment with abstract patterns. It could be close-ups of textures, unique angles, or even reflections. Abstract patterns allow them to think outside the box and showcase their imagination through photography.

9. Stop Motion Animation

Introduce your child to the world of stop motion animation using their photography skills. Ask them to capture a series of consecutive photos and then combine them to create a short animation. This activity not only enhances their pattern recognition but also introduces them to the basics of animation.

10. Pattern Storytelling

Challenge your child to create a visual story using patterns they capture. Ask them to arrange the photos in a sequence that tells a story or conveys an emotion. This activity encourages creativity, storyboarding skills, and pattern recognition, all while having fun with photography.

Photography activities for kids can be a fantastic way to nurture their creativity, improve their observation skills, and introduce them to the world of patterns. Whether it's through scavenger hunts, shape exploration, or abstract patterns, engaging children in photography can be an exciting and educational experience. So grab a camera, explore the world together, and let the patterns unfold!

Photography Activities for Kids is a series of project idea books designed to develop an interest in photography in 7-11 year old children.

The theme of Book 1 is patterns and textures – Creating Patterns.

This book contains 10 simple projects providing kids with some initial ideas to develop and make their own. The projects allow them to see things in a way that only kids can, to explore their surroundings and learn about things in a different way whilst having some fun taking pictures.

It will not teach everything there is to know about Digital Photography.

The most important thing about the projects in this book is for the young photographer not to worry about messing it up or be too disappointed with their efforts but to:
•Use their imagination to put their own stamp on each project.
•To be creative and photograph things as they see it.
•To be as artistic as they want to be
•And most of all TO HAVE FUN

The main emphasis of this book is that you don’t have to have a fancy camera to produce interesting images nor do you have to be an adult. To highlight this unique concept, all 70 project photographs in this book have been taken by Josh Whitmore, aged 7, and Sophie Whitmore, aged 5.

Photography is all about recording images. We cannot guarantee great works of art by tomorrow afternoon, but we can provide the tools to kick-start the enthusiasm to achieve that goal.
