Have you ever wondered how the political ideologies of right and left emerged? What were the ideas that shaped these ideologies, and who were the key thinkers behind them? In this article, we dive into the intellectual battle between Edmund Burke and Thomas Paine, which played a pivotal role in defining the foundations of right and left politics.
Edmund Burke: The Champion of Conservatism
Edmund Burke, an Irish statesman and philosopher, can be credited as one of the founders of modern conservatism. Born in Dublin in 1729, Burke rose to prominence as a member of the British Parliament.
Burke believed in the importance of tradition, established institutions, and gradual change. He saw society as a complex organism that evolved over time, and therefore, argued against radical, sudden revolutions. Burke's ideas were influenced by the Enlightenment thinkers such as John Locke and emphasized the preservation of existing social structures.

Thomas Paine: The Voice of Radicalism
Thomas Paine, on the other hand, was an English-American political activist and a symbol of radicalism during the late 18th century. Born in England in 1737, Paine became a key figure in the American and French revolutions.
Paine championed the rights of the common people and fought against monarchy and aristocracy. His major work, "Common Sense," published in 1776, advocated for the independence of the American colonies from British rule. Later, he wrote "Rights of Man," in which he criticized Burke's conservative ideology and defended the idea of a more egalitarian society.
The Clash of Ideas
The clash between Burke and Paine's ideologies came to a head during the French Revolution. While Burke condemned the revolution, arguing that it would lead to chaos and the destruction of traditional values, Paine saw it as an opportunity for the liberation of the oppressed masses.
Burke's most famous work, "Reflections on the Revolution in France," published in 1790, criticized the French Revolution and its radical aims. He argued that gradual change based on the historic foundations of society was the path to stability and progress.
Paine, on the other hand, supported the French Revolution and believed in the inherent rights of all individuals. His book, "The Rights of Man," published in 1791, defended the principles of democracy and criticized aristocratic privileges.
The Legacy of the Battle
The intellectual battle between Burke and Paine had a lasting impact on political thought and continues to shape our understanding of right and left ideologies. While Burke's conservatism influenced many subsequent conservative thinkers, Paine's advocacy for democracy and equality inspired generations of radicals and progressives.
The distinction between the right and the left can be seen in their opposing views on the role of tradition, authority, and equality. The right tends to prioritize stability and order, defending traditional institutions and hierarchies. In contrast, the left advocates for greater egalitarianism, social justice, and social change.
The clash between Burke and Paine highlighted the fundamental differences in how society should be organized and governed. It brought to light the eternal struggle between tradition and progress, authority and individual rights, and societal stability and societal change.
Edmund Burke and Thomas Paine were two influential figures whose ideas continue to shape the political landscape. The battle between conservatism and radicalism that they embodied laid the groundwork for the birth of right and left ideologies.
As we navigate the complexities of modern politics, it is essential to understand the origins and nuances of these ideologies. By studying the ideas of Burke and Paine, we can gain insight into the historical forces that have shaped our society and gain a clearer understanding of our own political beliefs.

An acclaimed portrait of Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine, and the origins of modern conservatism and liberalism
In The Great Debate, Yuval Levin explores the roots of the left/right political divide in America by examining the views of the men who best represented each side at its origin: Edmund Burke and Thomas Paine. Striving to forge a new political path in the tumultuous age of the American and French revolutions, these two ideological titans sparred over moral and philosophical questions about the nature of political life and the best approach to social change: radical and swift, or gradual and incremental. The division they articulated continues to shape our political life today.
Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the basis of our political order and Washington's acrimonious rifts today, The Great Debate offers a profound examination of what conservatism, progressivism, and the debate between them truly amount to.
