Adolf Hitler, the infamous dictator who orchestrated the rise of Nazi Germany, is a name that has left an indelible mark on human history. From 1933 to 1939, Hitler's reign of terror brought about a period of unprecedented power and influence for the Nazi regime. This article aims to shed light on the tumultuous years of Hitler's triumph, delving into the events, policies, and propaganda that shaped one of the darkest chapters of the 20th century.

The Rise to Power

In January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed as the Chancellor of Germany. This marked the beginning of a series of strategic moves that would consolidate his power and eventually transform the nation into a totalitarian state. Hitler capitalized on the discontentment prevailing in Germany due to the economic hardships resulting from the Treaty of Versailles following World War I. With his charisma and propaganda expertise, he gradually won over the support of the German population, using them as a stepping stone towards his ultimate goal of absolute power.

The Enabling Act of 1933 granted Hitler the authority to pass laws without parliamentary approval, effectively nullifying the democratic institutions in Germany. This legislation not only eliminated any potential opposition to Hitler's regime but also allowed him to implement his radical policies targeting various marginalized groups in society.

The Foundations of Nazism

Hitler's consolidation of power was accompanied by the establishment of the foundations of Nazism. The Nazi ideology, built upon notions of Aryan supremacy, anti-Semitism, and the concept of Lebensraum (living space), formed the basis for Hitler's vision of a racially pure German nation. The Nuremberg Laws of 1935 institutionalized discrimination against Jews, denying them basic rights and relegating them to second-class status.

Simultaneously, Hitler conducted a massive propaganda campaign, utilizing various mediums such as radio, film, and rallies to disseminate his ideology and cultivate a cult of personality. Joseph Goebbels, the Minister of Propaganda and Enlightenment, played a pivotal role in manipulating public opinion and creating an atmosphere of fear and nationalism that united the German population behind Hitler's agenda.

The Rearmament and Expansion

One of Hitler's key objectives was the rearmament and expansion of Germany's military might. In direct violation of the Treaty of Versailles, Hitler initiated a comprehensive military buildup, investing significant resources into the Luftwaffe (German air force), Kriegsmarine (German navy), and the Wehrmacht (German army). This aggressive militarization set the stage for Germany's expansionist ambitions and laid the groundwork for the ensuing conflicts that would consume Europe.

In 1938, Hitler pursued the Anschluss, the annexation of Austria, followed by the annexation of the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia. These expansions were marked by the utilization of intimidation tactics, false promises, and ultimately, full-scale invasions. Hitler's agenda of territorial expansion and the quest for Lebensraum brought Germany to the brink of war.

Invasion of Poland and the Outbreak of World War II

On September 1, 1939, German forces invaded Poland, subsequently leading to the outbreak of World War II. This marked a turning point in Hitler's triumph, as the global community was finally confronted with the true extent of his aggression and militaristic aspirations. The subsequent years witnessed the rapid conquest of multiple European nations by the German war machine, causing widespread devastation, suffering, and loss of life.

However, Hitler's victory was not infinite. The tide eventually turned against him, as the Allied forces, led by the likes of Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt, engaged in a determined fight against the Nazi regime. The horrific and seemingly unstoppable war machine built by Hitler was ultimately dismantled, and Germany faced defeat in 1945.

Legacy and Lessons Learned

The period between 1933 and 1939 remains a cautionary tale reminding humanity of the dangers of unchecked authoritarianism, hate-fueled ideology, and the devastating consequences of unchecked power. The Hitler years triumph serves as a haunting reminder that vigilance, resistance, and the preservation of democratic values are essential in preventing the rise of such dark forces, ensuring that history does not repeat itself.

The Hitler years of 1933-1939 were marked by the consolidation of power, the establishment of Nazi ideology, the rearmament and expansion of Germany, and the outbreak of World War II. Hitler's triumph was unparalleled, leaving an indelible mark on the 20th century. Understanding this period is crucial in order to learn from the past, prevent the repetition of such horrors, and safeguard the principles of freedom, equality, and justice that we hold dear.

From historian Frank McDonough, the first volume of a new chronicle of the Third Reich under Hitler's hand.

On January 30th, 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed the German Chancellor of a coalition government by President Hindenburg. Within a few months he had installed a dictatorship, jailing and killing his leftwing opponents, terrorizing the rest of the population and driving Jews out of public life. He embarked on a crash program of militaristic Keynesianism, reviving the economy and achieving full employment through massive public works, vast armaments spending and the cancellations of foreign debts. After the grim years of the Great Depression, Germany seemed to have been reborn as a brutal and determined European power.

Over the course of the years from 1933 to 1939, Hitler won over most of the population to his vision of a renewed Reich. In these years of domestic triumph, cunning maneuvers, pitting neighboring powers against each other and biding his time, we see Hitler preparing for the moment that would realize his ambition. But what drove Hitler's success was also to be the fatal flaw of his regime: a relentless belief in war as the motor of greatness, a dream of vast conquests in Eastern Europe and an astonishingly fanatical racism.
