At a time when our nation’s leaders are at odds over immigration reform, Luis Lopez’s life story is an extraordinary example of how legal immigration, if properly administered, will greatly benefit our country.

Luis’ life begins in Spain. After the Spanish Revolution, during WWII and barely 15, he boarded a Spanish ship to meet and live with his father in Brooklyn. Instead of the scheduled N.Y., all passengers were required to disembark in New Orleans, where young Luis found himself alone, penniless and without knowing a word of English. He joined the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy immediately after high school and sailed in the U. S. Merchant Fleet as a deck sailor during the final year of WWII. Little did 17-year old Luis know that he had joined the most dangerous branch of service. Postwar statistics show that 1768 ships were sunk or severely damaged, resulting in the death of 1 in 26 mariners, compared to the U.S. Army ‘s 1 in 48.

After receiving his degree in Foreign Trade and a sojourn in Colombia working for a gold mining company, he moved to California to teach Spanish, but was soon drafted into the U. S. Army and served as an infantry sergeant in Korea. Luis’ frank narration of life in the front lines is eye opening and his revelations of military behavior may be shocking to some readers.

While struggling to survive in the rigors of combat and unbearable cold in the Korean mountains, Luis concluded that nothing in life could be worse but, tragically, he would much too soon discover that watching the gradual deterioration of one and then a second of his children, and his titanic 14 year losing struggle to save their lives far exceeds any other human suffering. His 11 year unrelenting fight with insurance company executives to halt their perverse, persistent and unlawful efforts to cancel his dying children’s medical coverage clearly demonstrates that, to these entities, profit and greed far exceed human considerations.

During his 40-year career as owner of a successful international trading company, he traveled to most countries around the globe. His anecdotes about the diverse and powerful people he met, including one involving Saddam Hussein and his two sons, are nearly incredulous. For those who believe in Divine Providence, Luis’s disclosure of death-defying and other nearly inexplicable events that occurred at crucial moments in his life will certainly reinforce their beliefs.
