In the midst of darkness, a spark of light emerged from the depths of Cuba. It was a time when slavery reigned, but one young girl dared to dream of a world without chains. Her name was Tula, but she was known as the "Lightning Dreamer," Cuba's greatest abolitionist.

The Journey of a Dreamer

Tula was born into a society plagued by inequality and oppression. From a young age, she felt the weight of the chains that bound her people. But deep inside her heart, a fire burned bright, igniting her desire to fight for justice.

She spent her days devouring books, eager to learn about the world beyond the walls of her home. Through the pages of poems and novels, Tula's mind soared like a bird, exploring distant lands and different ways of life.

As she grew older, her dreams expanded beyond the words on the page. Tula yearned to make a real difference, to pierce through the darkness of slavery and bring light to her people's lives.

A Voice for the Voiceless

With a heart full of courage and determination, Tula began writing poetry that echoed the pain and suffering of the enslaved. Her words painted vivid pictures of oppression, challenging the very foundations of her society.

As her poetry circulated amongst fellow abolitionists and intellectuals, Tula's voice grew stronger. She attended clandestine meetings, where she met like-minded individuals who shared her passion for freedom.

Inspired by the works of famous abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, Tula continued to write and speak out against the horrors of slavery. Her words, like bolts of lightning, electrified audiences and sent shockwaves through the hearts of her oppressors.

Facing Adversity and Spreading Hope

Tula's activism did not go unnoticed, and the authorities grew wary of her influence. She faced threats, intimidation, and even imprisonment. But through it all, she remained resolute, refusing to be silenced.

Despite the constant danger, Tula's impact could not be contained. Her poems were smuggled out of Cuba and found their way to abolitionist circles in Europe and the United States. People around the world were captivated by the powerful words of the Lightning Dreamer, and her message of freedom resonated across continents.

The Legacy Lives On

Today, Tula's legacy lives on as a symbol of bravery and resilience. Her poems continue to inspire generations, reminding us of the power of words to challenge injustice and ignite change.

The Lightning Dreamer, Cuba's greatest abolitionist, dared to dream of a world without chains. Through her poetry, she shattered the silence and pierced through the darkness, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be remembered.

“I find it so easy to forget / that I’m just a girl who is expected / to live / without thoughts.”

Opposing slavery in Cuba in the nineteenth century was dangerous. The most daring abolitionists were poets who veiled their work in metaphor. Of these, the boldest was Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, nicknamed Tula. In passionate, accessible verses of her own, Engle evokes the voice of this book-loving feminist and abolitionist who bravely resisted an arranged marriage at the age of fourteen, and was ultimately courageous enough to fight against injustice. Historical notes, excerpts, and source notes round out this exceptional tribute.
