Omni encapsulates various art forms, such as painting, sculpture, digital art, and installations, aiming to stimulate not just our visual senses, but also our innermost thoughts and feelings. By engaging our minds and souls, Omni transcends conventional boundaries and invites us to perceive the world from different perspectives.

The Genesis: Omni's Origins and Evolution

The inception of The Art of Omni can be traced back to the visionary mind of renowned artist and philosopher, Samuel Aurelius. Combining his passion for aesthetics with an unwavering curiosity about the human mind, Samuel embarked on a mission to bridge the gap between art and consciousness.

Samuel's relentless exploration led him to delve deep into the realms of psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy. His profound understanding of how the mind processes sensory information and constructs reality laid the foundation for Omni's unique approach. By manipulating visual stimuli and playing with perceptual illusions, Samuel sought to challenge our preconceived notions and expand the boundaries of what art can achieve.

Over the years, Omni has evolved into a movement, attracting talented artists from around the globe. Each artist brings a distinct perspective and uses their chosen medium to convey their interpretation of The Mind's Eye. From abstract surrealism to hyper-realistic representations, Omni offers a diverse and awe-inspiring collection that leaves spectators spellbound.

Unveiling the Illusions: The Techniques of Omni

The prowess behind The Art of Omni lies in its ability to manipulate the viewer's perception. Through a carefully crafted combination of techniques, Omni artists create an immersive experience that challenges our understanding of reality. Let's explore some of the key techniques employed by these visionary artists:

1. Trompe-l'oeil:

This French term, meaning "deceive the eye," refers to the technique of creating hyper-realistic illusions that trick the viewer into perceiving the art as three-dimensional. Through meticulous attention to detail and masterful use of light and shadow, Omni artists bring static works to life, blurring the line between reality and artistic creation.

2. Forced Perspective:

By skillfully manipulating proportions and depth cues, Omni artists create mind-bending illusions that challenge our sense of space and perspective. Through a strategic interplay of size and distance, these artwork forces the viewer to question their understanding of spatial relationships, leaving us in a state of visual awe.

3. Optical Illusions:

Optical illusions play a central role in the world of art. Omni takes these illusions to a whole new level by employing them in unique and captivating ways. From ambiguous figures that can be interpreted in multiple ways to impossible objects that defy our understanding of physics, these optical illusions immerse us in a world where reality becomes a malleable concept.

Unlocking the Symbiosis: The Viewer's Role in The Art of Omni

While the techniques employed by the Omni artists form the cornerstone of The Art of Omni, the true magic lies in the symbiotic relationship that emerges between the artwork and the viewer. Omni invites the viewer to become an integral part of the experience, actively engaging their mind's eye in a harmonious dance with the artist's creation.

As we gaze upon an Omni masterpiece, our mind's eye embarks on a journey that transcends the limits imposed by the physical world. We find ourselves immersed in a tapestry of colors, shapes, and emotions, each stroke of the artist's brush inviting us to dive deeper into the realm of imagination.

The Art of Omni encourages us to question our own perception, reminding us that reality is subjective and can be molded in countless ways. It challenges us to step out of our comfort zones, to abandon the familiarity of the mundane, and to embrace the boundless prospects presented by The Mind's Eye.

The Legacy of Omni: Shaping the Future of Art

The Art of Omni has ignited a revolution in the world of art, redefining the way we engage with artistic creations. Through its fusion of psychology, neuroscience, and artistic brilliance, Omni has opened doors to new possibilities, inspiring other artists to explore the infinite potential of The Mind's Eye.

As technology continues to advance, Omni artists have embraced the digital realm, transcending the limitations of traditional art forms. Virtual reality experiences, interactive installations, and augmented reality exhibitions have become the new frontiers of Omni, captivating audiences and pushing the boundaries of what art can achieve.

The legacy of Omni extends beyond its visual impact. It has become a catalyst for dialogue and introspection, stimulating conversations about the nature of perception, consciousness, and the interplay between the artist and the viewer. By intertwining art and science, Omni reminds us that the beauty of human imagination knows no bounds.

Omni was a jewel among popular science magazines of its era (1978-1998). Science Digest, Science News, Scientific America, and Discover may have all been selling well to armchair scientists, but Omni masterfully blended cutting edge science news and science fiction, flashy graphic design, a touch of sex, and the images of a generation of artists completely free and unburdened by the disciplines of the masters. Created by the legendary Bob Guccione, better known for founding Penthouse than perhaps any of the other facets of his inspired career in business, art, and literature, Guccione handpicked the artists and illustrators that contributed to the Omni legacy-they in turn created works ignited by passion and intellect, two of Guccione's principal ideals.

The Mind's Eye: The Art of Omni is the very first publication to celebrate in stunning detail the exceptional science fiction imagery of this era in an oversized format. The Mind's Eye contains 185 images from contributing Omni artists including John Berkey, Chris Moore, H.R. Giger, Rafal Olbinski, Ralle, Tsuneo Sanda, Hajime Sorayama, Robert McCall, and Colin Hay among many more, along with quotes from artists, contributors, writers, and critics.

Omni lived in a time well before the digital revolution. The images you see on these pages have taken years to track down and brought the editors in touch with many esteemed artists, amazing photographers and dusty storage lockers. Their quest is far from over; you'll notice an almost decade-long gap in the material, the contents of which were either lost or destroyed. Efforts to search throughout the universe for any images will continue and will be shared with the world at the all-things-Omni website, omnireboot.com. Stay tuned...

Collected in book form for the first time ever, the striking art from this extraordinary magazine will delight fans who remember seeing the work years ago and newcomers interested in the unique aesthetic of this genre's biggest artists.

"Omni was a magazine about the future. From 1978 to 1998 Omni blew minds byregularly featuring extensive Q&As with some of the top scientists of the 20thcentury-E.O. Wilson, Francis Crick, Jonas Salk-tales of the paranormal, and some ofthe most important science fiction to ever see magazine publication: William Gibson'sgenre-defining stories 'Burning Chrome' and 'Johnny Mnemonic,' Orson Scott Card's 'Unaccompanied Sonata,' novellas by Harlan Ellison and George R. R. Martin, 'Thanksgiving,' a postapocalyptic tale by Joyce Carol Oates-even William S. Burroughsgraced its pages." -Vice magazine, Motherboard

"Omni is not a science magazine. It is a magazine about the future...Omni was suigeneris. Although there were plenty of science magazines over the years...Omni wasthe first magazine to slant all its pieces toward the future. It was fun to read andgorgeous to look at." -Ben Bova, six-time Hugo award winner
