Phillis Wheatley: The Beginning of a Literary Journey

In the midst of the American Revolution, a young enslaved girl named Phillis Wheatley was brought to Boston from West Africa. Born in Senegal around 1753, she was sold into slavery and transported to the British colonies in America. The Wheatley family, who owned her, recognized her immense talent and intellect, providing her with an education uncommon for enslaved individuals at the time.

Phillis Wheatley's poetic talent blossomed at a young age. Remarkably, she mastered the English language in just a few years and began to write powerful verses that captivated the hearts and minds of those who read them. Her verses spoke of freedom, abolition of slavery, and the pursuit of equal rights.

Encounters That Shaped A Nation

Phillis Wheatley became an influential figure during the American Revolutionary War. Her poetry gained popularity and was even published in newspapers, spreading her words of unity and liberty to a wider audience. As her literary success grew, she caught the attention of several prominent figures, including the founding fathers of the United States.

One of her most memorable encounters occurred when she met George Washington, the first President of the United States. Washington was deeply moved by her poem honoring him and invited her to visit him at his residence. The meeting was a significant moment, as it symbolized the recognition and respect Washington had for Wheatley's talent and intelligence.

The Power of Her Words

Phillis Wheatley's poetry reverberated throughout the nation, inspiring many to reflect on the true essence of liberty and justice. Her poems captured the struggle for freedom, highlighting the injustices of slavery and the urgent need for its abolition. She used her words not only to articulate her own experiences as an enslaved person but also to ignite a fervor for change among others, regardless of their race or social standing.

Unfortunately, Wheatley's life was cut short at the young age of 31. However, her contribution to American literature and her impact on the fight for equality still resonates today. Her poetry stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of African Americans throughout history, underscoring the importance of embracing diversity and recognizing the immense potential that lies within every individual.

A Lasting Legacy

Phillis Wheatley paved the way for future generations of black poets, leaving an indelible mark on American literature. Her encounters with the founding fathers demonstrated that one's race or background should not hinder the pursuit of one's passions and the fight for a better world.

Her words echoed through generations, inspiring countless writers and activists who continue to carry her torch, challenging societal norms and striving for a more just society. As we look back at Phillis Wheatley's life, we are reminded of her remarkable journey, her bravery, and her unwavering dedication to using her voice to shape a nation.

In 1773, the slave Phillis Wheatley literally wrote her way to freedom. The first person of African descent to publish a book of poems in English, she was emancipated by her owners in recognition of her literary achievement. For a time, Wheatley was the most famous black woman in the West. But Thomas Jefferson, unlike his contemporaries Ben Franklin and George Washington, refused to acknowledge her gifts as a writer -- a repudiation that eventually inspired generations of black writers to build an extraordinary body of literature in their efforts to prove him wrong.

In The Trials of Phillis Wheatley, Henry Louis Gates Jr. explores the pivotal roles that Wheatley and Jefferson played in shaping the black literary tradition. Writing with all the lyricism and critical skill that place him at the forefront of American letters, Gates brings to life the characters, debates, and controversy that surrounded Wheatley in her day and ours.
