What Is Wrong With Twitter?
![Jese Leos](https://epilogueepic.com/author/jacob-hayes.jpg)
Twitter, which was launched in 2006, has become one of the most popular social media platforms today. With its 330 million monthly active users, it allows people to express their thoughts, share news, and connect with others in a concise and instant manner. However, despite its popularity, Twitter has been subjected to criticism for various reasons. In this article, we will explore the issues that have plagued the platform and discuss what is wrong with Twitter.
The Rise of Misinformation
One of the major problems with Twitter is the spread of misinformation. Due to the limited character count, tweets often lack context and nuance, making it easier for false information to be shared and amplified. This problem has been heightened by the prevalence of bots and fake accounts, which can rapidly disseminate misleading or malicious content. The lack of effective moderation and fact-checking on the platform has allowed misinformation to thrive, leading to the erosion of trust among users.

Toxicity and Online Harassment
Twitter has also gained a reputation for its toxic environment and prevalence of online harassment. The anonymity provided by the platform allows individuals to easily engage in abusive behavior without facing immediate consequences. This has resulted in countless cases of cyberbullying, hate speech, and targeted harassment. Despite efforts to combat this issue, such as implementing reporting features and suspending accounts, Twitter still struggles to effectively tackle the problem and provide a safe and inclusive space for its users.
Algorithm Bias and Echo Chambers
The algorithm used by Twitter to curate users' timelines can inadvertently contribute to the creation of echo chambers. By showing users content similar to what they have previously engaged with, Twitter can unintentionally reinforce existing beliefs and limit exposure to diverse perspectives. This can further polarize discussions and hinder meaningful conversations. The lack of transparency regarding the algorithm's workings has raised concerns about potential bias and manipulation.
Political Manipulation and Influence
Twitter's influence in politics has grown substantially over the years. Politicians, activists, and public figures utilize the platform to voice their opinions, connect with constituents, and shape public discourse. However, this also opens up opportunities for political manipulation. The spread of disinformation during elections, the use of Twitter bots to sway public opinion, and the amplification of divisive rhetoric have all raised concerns about the platform's impact on democratic processes.
Privacy and Data Security
Twitter, like many other social media platforms, collects a vast amount of user data that is used for targeted advertising and personalization. However, this has led to concerns about privacy and data security. Instances of data breaches and unauthorized access to user information have plagued the platform, eroding trust and giving rise to privacy concerns among users.
While Twitter continues to be a popular platform for sharing ideas and connecting with others, it is not without its flaws. The issues mentioned in this article, including the spread of misinformation, toxicity, algorithm bias, political manipulation, and privacy concerns, highlight the urgent need for Twitter to address these problems to ensure a healthier and more inclusive online environment. By taking proactive steps to combat these issues, Twitter can regain trust, improve user experience, and better serve its diverse user base.

What Is Wrong With Twitteris the completely new sequel to the Amazon Bestseller, Twitter Surviving Change...a quick-read handbook packed with solid information on the New Twitter (released July 2019). The author introduces you to the new desktop interface with tweaks that make navigation faster; you will also learn how your Settings and Privacy options have changed, how to check them and make informed choices for your data sharing, and why you should do this first on Twitter.
If something seems "wrong" with your Twitter stream, check our guides for easy to follow (and understand) directions on finding a solution and making the most of your platform experience. We continue seeing issues reported on back in 2018, occurring now in Spring 2020...
This compact guide also includes important information on Twitter's new Rules (pronounced by the company as "human readable" this time), how to find and join "healthy conversations", steps to take if "something seems to be wrong" with your account or your platform experience in general, in addition to strategies and tactics for writers planning to sell their books on their streams, for promoters of products who can easily run afoul of the new spam rules (this time the Rules include examples, a tremendous improvement!).
Twitter's expanded Analytics are also covered, always a great -- and still "free" -- source of information to gauge a tweet's effectiveness (or not) on the platform; these can quickly become indispensable to businesses operating on Twitter. We were excited to find the addition of video analytics, which seems to be gaining in popularity across Twitter.
There is also information included on the new issues facing international businesses on the platform as a result of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the European Union Copyright Directive (EUCD). Resources for further reading on social media issues are appended.
What Is Wrong With Twitter is for anyone on Twitter, if you've been there an hour or a decade like ourselves...The book is easily readable, crafted for the non-techie, not cluttered with impossible-to-understand jargon; explanations and references are also included to reinforce understanding.
Twitter is a massive, evolving platform with so many diverse avenues to explore; it's not unexpected to run across issues in your account. Instead of giving up in frustration (as we once did many years ago), let this book guide you towards locating an answer to a problem as quickly as possible and getting back on track.
