When it comes to stories of courage and resilience, Yellow Star Jennifer Roy's tale stands out as an inspiration. Jennifer Roy, born in a small town in France, was just a young girl when World War II broke out, and her life would soon be forever changed by the horrors of the Holocaust. With unwavering determination and the indomitable spirit of a survivor, Jennifer Roy's story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit in the face of unthinkable adversity.

The Early Years

Jennifer Roy was born in 1937 in Moret-sur-Loing, France, to a loving and close-knit family. Her childhood was filled with laughter, curiosity, and a thirst for knowledge. However, as the war loomed closer, her life took a dramatic turn. At the age of six, Jennifer and her family were forced to wear the yellow star that labeled them as Jews, a haunting symbol of their impending persecution.

Life became increasingly perilous as the Nazi regime tightened its grip on France. Jennifer and her family faced constant threats, discrimination, and fear. However, amidst the darkness, the young girl found solace in the power of education and storytelling. She discovered the strength of her voice through writing, a lifeline that would help her navigate the darkest moments of her life.

A Journey into Darkness

In 1942, Jennifer and her family were torn apart when they were arrested by the French police. They were separated and sent to various concentration camps. Jennifer, only five years old at the time, was imprisoned in the French internment camp of Drancy, the notorious transit camp from where Jews were sent to Auschwitz and other extermination camps.

Inside the cramped and dehumanizing conditions of the camp, Jennifer witnessed unspeakable atrocities. She endured hunger, sickness, and the constant fear of death. However, she refused to let her spirit be broken. In her darkest moments, she relied on the power of storytelling, crafting tales in her mind to escape the harsh reality surrounding her.

Survival and Beyond

Miraculously, Jennifer Roy and her mother were liberated in 1945, as the Allied forces ultimately defeated the Nazis. The war had taken a toll on Jennifer's family, as they had lost many loved ones in the Holocaust. However, with the strength of her resilience, Jennifer began the long and painful process of rebuilding her life.

After the war, Jennifer Roy immigrated to the United States, carrying with her the stories and memories of her survival. Determined to honor the lives lost and to share their untold stories, she dedicated herself to writing. Her memoir, aptly titled "Yellow Star," was published in 2006 and received critical acclaim.

An Enduring Legacy

Jennifer Roy's incredible journey serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. Her story not only educates future generations about the horrors of the Holocaust but also inspires them to stand up against discrimination and hate. Roy's writings continue to shed light on the untold stories of survivors and serve as a testament to the power of storytelling as a means of healing and remembrance.

Beyond her memoir, Jennifer Roy has dedicated her life to advocating for tolerance and understanding. She has spoken at schools, universities, and Holocaust education centers, sharing her experiences and urging people to embrace empathy and compassion.

“In 1945 the war ended. The Germans surrendered, and the ghetto was liberated. Out of over a quarter of a million people, about 800 walked out of the ghetto. Of those who survived, only twelve were children. I was one of the twelve.” For more than fifty years after the war, Syvia, like many Holocaust survivors, did not talk about her experiences in the Lodz ghetto in Poland. She buried her past in order to move forward. But finally she decided it was time to share her story, and so she told it to her niece, who has re-told it here using free verse inspired by her aunt. This is the true story of Syvia Perlmutter—a story of courage, heartbreak, and finally survival despite the terrible circumstances in which she grew up. A timeline, historical notes, and an author’s note are included.
