Imagine being completely absorbed in a character, effortlessly portraying their emotions and motivations on the stage or screen. This is the ultimate goal of every actor, and one man revolutionized the way actors approach their craft: Constantin Stanislavski. Through his groundbreaking techniques and deep understanding of human psychology, Stanislavski gave birth to method acting, forever changing the landscape of theater and film. In this article, we delve into the world of Stanislavski and explore his invaluable insights on building character.
to Constantin Stanislavski
Constantin Stanislavski was a Russian actor, director, and theater practitioner. Born in 1863, he dedicated his life to unlocking the secrets of authentic and believable acting. Stanislavski's approach to acting was born out of a desire to move away from the melodramatic and rigid styles that dominated the late 19th century. He sought to create a more naturalistic and truthful form of performance that would deeply connect with audiences.
His groundbreaking work led to the development of method acting, a technique that emphasizes the actor's internal emotional experience in order to create realistic characters. Stanislavski's ideas and practices continue to inspire actors around the world, making him one of the most influential figures in the history of theater and film.

The Four Pillars of Building Character
To truly understand how Stanislavski revolutionized acting, we need to delve into the four pillars of building character according to his method. These four pillars are:
1. Objective
Stanislavski believed that every character has an objective, a goal they strive to achieve in every scene. This objective gives the character a sense of purpose and direction. Actors must identify and understand their character's objective in order to fully embody their motivations and desires.
For example, if you are portraying a character who seeks justice, your objective in a particular scene might be to expose an antagonist's wrongdoing. By clearly defining your character's objective, you can infuse your performance with a sense of determination and drive.
2. Action
Actions are the physical manifestations of a character's objective. Stanislavski believed that an actor must focus on their character's actions rather than their emotions. By concentrating on what the character does to achieve their objective, actors can create tangible and believable performances.
Using the previous example, an action your character might take to expose the antagonist's wrongdoing could be gathering evidence or confronting the antagonist directly. By grounding your performance in specific and intentional actions, you can bring your character to life in a way that resonates with the audience.
3. Subtext
According to Stanislavski, subtext is the unspoken thoughts and emotions that lie beneath the surface of a scene. It is the hidden layer of meaning that exists between the lines of dialogue. Understanding the subtext allows actors to imbue their performances with depth and nuance.
When portraying a character, you must not only pay attention to the words your character says but also the subtext that underlies those words. Through subtle gestures, facial expressions, and tone of voice, you can convey the underlying emotions and intentions of your character, capturing the audience's attention and creating a richer performance.
4. Given Circumstances
Given circumstances refer to the contextual elements that influence a character's actions and emotions. These can include the character's backstory, relationships, and the environment in which the scene takes place. Understanding the given circumstances allows actors to fully immerse themselves in their character's world.
By delving into your character's given circumstances, you can recreate their past experiences and understand how these shape their present behavior. This deep understanding will inform your performance, giving it authenticity and making your character's journey relatable to the audience.
Application in Modern Acting
Stanislavski's techniques have stood the test of time and are still widely used by actors today. Method acting, an extension of his teachings, has become a dominant force in the world of theater and film. Many actors, including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and Meryl Streep, credit Stanislavski's approach as a key influence on their success.
One of the reasons Stanislavski's techniques continue to resonate with actors is their emphasis on authenticity. By focusing on the character's objective, actions, subtext, and given circumstances, actors can delve deep into their character's psyche and bring them to life in a way that feels real and true.
Additionally, Stanislavski's approach aligns with the current trend towards more nuanced and psychologically driven performances. Modern audiences crave authenticity, and by using Stanislavski's techniques, actors can create characters who are multi-dimensional and relatable, captivating audiences with their depth of emotion and complexity.
Constantin Stanislavski's contributions to the world of acting are immeasurable. His revolutionary techniques have not only influenced countless actors but have also shaped the very nature of theater and film. By focusing on the four pillars of building character - objective, action, subtext, and given circumstances - actors can unlock the secrets of authentic acting and create performances that resonate with audiences on a profound level.
Whether you are a seasoned actor or an aspiring performer, studying Stanislavski's teachings can greatly enhance your craft. By embodying his principles, you have the power to transport audiences to new worlds and touch their hearts through the magic of acting.
So go forth, unleash your creativity, and embrace the transformative power of building character the Constantin Stanislavski way.

Building a Character is one of the three volumes that make up Stanislavski’s The Acting Trilogy.
An Actor Prepares explores the inner preparation an actor must undergo in order to explore a role to the full. In this volume, Sir John Gielgud said, this great director “found time to explain a thousand things that have always troubled actors and fascinated students.”
Building a Character discusses the external techniques of acting: the use of the body, movement, diction, singing, expression, and control.
Creating a Role describes the preparation that precedes actual performance, with extensive discussions of Gogol’s The Inspector General and Shakespeare’s Othello. Sir Paul Scofield called Creating a Role “immeasurably important” for the actor.
These three volumes belong on any actor’s short shelf of essential books.
