Have you ever dreamt of escaping the hustle and bustle of modern life and immersing yourself in an oasis of tranquility? A place where nature's beauty reigns supreme, and ancient traditions are carefully preserved? Well, let me take you on a mesmerizing journey through my apprenticeship in the gardens of Kyoto, where I discovered the true essence of harmony and became a master of the art of garden design.

The Serene Beauty Of Kyoto's Gardens

Kyoto, often referred to as the cultural heart of Japan, is renowned for its breathtaking gardens that showcase the perfect blend of nature and man's artistic interventions. These gardens, characterized by their meticulous design, encompass a variety of styles, each carefully crafted to evoke different emotions and convey unique meanings.

My apprenticeship began with a sense of wonderment as I stepped into the enchanting world of Kyoto's gardens. The first garden I encountered was the Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion Garden. As the sun shimmered on the tranquil pond, reflecting the golden brilliance of the pavilion, I couldn't help but be captivated by the harmony and balance of the elements.

During my apprenticeship, I had the privilege of working in various gardens, each with its own personality and rich history. The Ryoan-ji Temple Garden, famous for its Zen rock garden, taught me the power of minimalism and the art of creating harmony through simplicity.

As I walked through the moss-covered pathways of the Saiho-ji, known as the Moss Temple, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate details that make up this magnificent garden. The vibrant shades of green and the delicate textures of the moss transported me to a world untouched by time.

One of my most profound experiences was at the Tenryu-ji Temple Garden. Nestled in the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, this garden is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between human and nature. The towering bamboo stalks swayed gently with the wind, whispering ancient stories that stirred my soul.

The Art of Garden Design: My Apprenticeship

Under the guidance of esteemed garden masters, I delved into the intricate techniques and philosophical principles that govern the art of garden design. Each day brought new lessons as I learned to cultivate a deep respect for nature and the ancient traditions that have shaped these gardens for centuries.

One of the fundamental concepts I grasped during my apprenticeship was the importance of symbolism in garden design. Every stone, plant, and water feature played a significant role in conveying the intended message of the garden. The placement of rocks to represent mountains or the arrangement of stepping stones to simulate a journey were not arbitrary decisions but deliberate choices infused with meaning.

Another crucial aspect I learned was the concept of borrowed scenery, known as "shakkei" in Japanese. This technique involves incorporating the surrounding landscape into the garden's design, blurring the boundaries between man-made and natural elements. By skillfully framing distant mountains or strategically placing trees, the garden becomes a harmonious extension of its environment.

Moreover, my apprenticeship taught me the meticulous art of pruning and shaping trees, also known as "niwaki." The careful manipulation of branches and foliage brings out the essential character and beauty of each tree, transforming them into living sculptures that embody the spirit of the garden.

A Life-Altering Journey

My apprenticeship in the gardens of Kyoto was not just a skill-building endeavor but an inner transformation. The time spent in these serene settings allowed me to reconnect with myself and gain a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance of nature.

It was through the pursuit of perfection in garden design that I discovered the imperfections within myself. The art of honing one's craft requires patience, attention to detail, and a willingness to adapt. The process of learning from the gardens taught me that life, too, is a continuous journey of growth and embracing imperfections.

As I bid farewell to Kyoto, the memories of my time as an apprentice will forever stay engraved in my heart. The gardens of Kyoto hold a timeless allure that transcends borders and time. The serenity, the subtle scents, and the delicate interplay of elements continue to inspire me long after my apprenticeship concluded.

A Call to Experience the Gardens of Kyoto

If you are seeking a transformative experience that will transport you to a world of beauty and serenity, a visit to the gardens of Kyoto is a must. Immerse yourself in the vibrant traditions, learn the ancient techniques, and allow the gardens to speak to your soul.

Let the whispers of the wind guide you through the enchanting pathways, let the fragrance of cherry blossoms envelop you, and let the tranquility of the gardens rejuvenate your spirit. Your journey through the gardens of Kyoto will not only be an escape from reality but a profound encounter with the essence of life itself.

“An unusual and entertaining memoir.” —New York Times Book Review

At thirty-five, Leslie Buck made an impulsive decision to put her personal life on hold to pursue her passion. Leaving behind a full life of friends, love, and professional security, she became the first American woman to learn pruning from one of the most storied landscaping companies in Kyoto. Cutting Back recounts Buck’s bold journey and the revelations she has along the way.

During her apprenticeship in Japan, she learns that the best Kyoto gardens look so natural they appear untouched by human hands, even though her crew spends hours meticulously cleaning every pebble in the streams. She is taught how to bring nature’s essence into a garden scene, how to design with native plants, and how to subtly direct a visitor through a landscape. But she learns the most important lessons from her fellow gardeners: how to balance strength with grace, seriousness with humor, and technique with heart.
