It was a fateful year in 1768 when the HMS Endeavour, under the command of Captain James Cook, set sail from England on a mission that would not only change the course of history but also completely redefine our understanding of the world.

The purpose of this expedition was to observe the transit of Venus across the sun, but it ended up being so much more than that. The voyage of the Endeavour took Cook and his crew on an incredible journey of discovery, exploration, and scientific breakthroughs that would have a lasting impact on humanity.

At the time, much of the world remained a mystery with vast areas of uncharted territory. Cook and his crew were tasked with exploring these unknown lands, mapping new coastlines, and documenting the flora, fauna, and indigenous peoples they encountered along the way.

The design of the Endeavour played a crucial role in the success of the expedition. This sturdy, three-masted vessel was specifically built for exploration and had a relatively flat bottom, which allowed it to sail closer to the shorelines and navigate shallow waters. Its unique construction also made it more resistant to the harsh conditions of the high seas, ensuring the crew's safety amidst unpredictable weather.

As the Endeavour sailed across vast oceans, the crew documented numerous scientific discoveries that forever changed our understanding of the world. They found evidence of the existence of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, discovered and mapped many Pacific islands, and made extensive observations of various celestial phenomena.

One of the most significant achievements of the Endeavour expedition was the mapping of New Zealand. Cook and his crew meticulously charted the coastlines of the North and South Islands, accurately recording their shape and dimensions. This invaluable information would later serve as the foundation for future explorations and has continued to be used by geographers, navigators, and scientists for centuries.

But it wasn't just the scientific achievements that made the Endeavour voyage so groundbreaking. The interactions between the crew and the indigenous peoples they encountered along their journey were also momentous. Cook's approach was one of respect, curiosity, and collaboration, which allowed for meaningful cultural exchanges and a deeper understanding of the world's diverse societies.

Unfortunately, the Endeavour's mission came to an end in 1771 when the ship was declared unseaworthy due to damage sustained during its voyage. But its legacy lived on, and various replicas and models of the Endeavour have been created to commemorate its historic significance.

The story of the Endeavour and its impact on the world serves as a reminder of the transformative power of exploration and discovery. Through courage, curiosity, and a desire to expand our knowledge, we can achieve remarkable feats that shape our understanding of the world and its inhabitants.

An unprecedented history of the storied ship that Darwin said helped add a hemisphere to the civilized world

The Enlightenment was an age of endeavors, with Britain consumed by the impulse for grand projects undertaken at speed. Endeavour was also the name given to a collier bought by the Royal Navy in 1768. It was a commonplace coal-carrying vessel that no one could have guessed would go on to become the most significant ship in the chronicle of British exploration.

The first history of its kind, Peter Moore’s Endeavour: The Ship That Changed the World is a revealing and comprehensive account of the storied ship’s role in shaping the Western world. Endeavour famously carried James Cook on his first major voyage, charting for the first time New Zealand and the eastern coast of Australia. Yet it was a ship with many lives: During the battles for control of New York in 1776, she witnessed the bloody birth of the republic. As well as carrying botanists, a Polynesian priest, and the remains of the first kangaroo to arrive in Britain, she transported Newcastle coal and Hessian soldiers. NASA ultimately named a space shuttle in her honor. But to others she would be a toxic symbol of imperialism.

Through careful research, Moore tells the story of one of history’s most important sailing ships, and in turn shines new light on the ambition and consequences of the Age of Enlightenment.
