Standing tall on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty has long symbolized freedom, hope, and the promise of a better life for millions of immigrants who arrived in America's shores. This magnificent statue, officially known as Liberty Enlightening the World, is not only a captivating work of art but also a powerful reminder of the values that the United States were built upon.

But have you ever wondered how this grandest of statues found her home in America? The journey of the Statue of Liberty is as fascinating as the statue itself, filled with struggles, determination, and unwavering belief in the American dream.

A Gift from France

The origins of the Statue of Liberty can be traced back to the friendship between two nations: the United States and France. In the late 19th century, French intellectuals and politicians, including the renowned sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, envisioned a grand statue to commemorate the friendship and shared values between their nation and the United States.

With the support of Edouard de Laboulaye, a French jurist and political leader, Bartholdi began working on the statue's design. Inspired by the Roman goddess Libertas, he aimed to create a colossal statue that would represent the idea of liberty and serve as a symbol of America's commitment to freedom.

After completing the initial design and obtaining funding from both France and the United States, Bartholdi embarked on a mission to bring his vision to life.

A Monumental Task

Creating a statue of such immense proportions was no small feat. The statue was to be 151 feet tall, from the base to the tip of the torch, making it the tallest iron sculpture of its time. Bartholdi recruited the help of French engineer Gustave Eiffel, who would later design the famous Eiffel Tower, to assist him in engineering the structure.

The Statue of Liberty was constructed in France using copper sheets hammered into shape and was then disassembled for transport to the United States. The project faced numerous challenges, including the lack of funds and difficulties in finding a suitable location to erect the statue.

A Home on Liberty Island

While the statue was being constructed, the search for the perfect location to accommodate this magnificent monument intensified. Various cities, including Boston and Philadelphia, vied for the opportunity to host the Statue of Liberty. It was ultimately decided that the statue would be erected on Bedloe's Island, now known as Liberty Island, in New York Harbor.

The choice of this location was not arbitrary. New York City was seen as a gateway to America, as it was the first port of entry for millions of immigrants who arrived seeking a new life. Placing the statue in this prominent position would ensure that it would be seen by all those coming to America, becoming a beacon of hope and inspiration.

Unveiling and Dedication

After years of hard work, the Statue of Liberty was finally completed in France and disassembled for transportation to the United States in 1885. It arrived in New York Harbor the following year, where it was meticulously reassembled on its pedestal.

The grand unveiling and dedication ceremony took place on October 28, 1886. Thousands of spectators gathered to witness this historic event, including President Grover Cleveland. The statue's torch was lit, symbolizing freedom and enlightenment.

An Iconic Symbol

Over the years, the Statue of Liberty has become an iconic symbol not only for the United States but for freedom and democracy worldwide. It has welcomed countless immigrants and served as a potent reminder of the opportunities that await those who arrive in America's shores.

In recognition of its cultural and historical significance, the Statue of Liberty was designated a National Monument in 1924 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Today, it continues to inspire visitors from around the world who come to admire its grandeur and learn about the story behind America's grandest statue.

This grandest of statues continues to remind us that America is a land built on the dreams and aspirations of countless individuals, a place where opportunity and liberty flourish.

A deeply informative and gorgeously illustrated look at the Statue of Liberty, from award-winning nonfiction master Robert Byrd.

America's most iconic national symbol was a gift from France to the United States--provided America raised the money for the pedestal on which it was to stand. Urged on by the publisher Joseph Pulitzer, it was raised, largely with the help of children, in the first example of a crowd sourced fund-raising campaign. This book tells the story of the best gift ever: how it was designed, created, transported, and then finally erected on its pedestal in the entrance to New York Harbor. Readable text is enhanced with illustrations chock-full of historical detail in Bob Byrd's lighthearted, witty style.
