“Until American occupation is over, Japanese would not read this book in Japanese.” ---Douglas MacArthur (his letter to Label Thompson on August 6, 1949)

The original of 『Mirror for Americans: JAPAN』was published in United States in 1948, three years after Japan’s defeat. At that time, Ms. Momoyo Hara, a translator, was given the original by Helen Mears, and obtained concurrence of the author to publish a Japanese version of this book.

Helen Mears reminded us in her book of something important to Japanese that was forgotten or hid from us by describing Japan in the context of global history during the period of 92 years starting from the incident Perry’s unexpected visit with his 7 Black Ships in 1853, which forced Japan to open its door to the world, to the Japanese surrender forces d by General MacArthur’s brigades.

What Helen Mears taught us is our path since Meiji Restoration. Japan all of sudden got into the competitive world in 1853 after spending about 215-year peaceful life, being isolated from the world. Then Japan grew and climbed up the ladder until it fell down. As Helen depicted in precise, I believe that Japanese look into the path in history from a global view point, but not from the domestic stand point; why Japan took such action, what was wrong, what could be justified. While we sincerely admit and apologize our wrong doing, we should explain to the world what we believe are fairly justified.
