England's medieval history is filled with powerful kings, brave knights, and influential noble families. However, hidden within the annals of history are the queens who often played a crucial role in shaping the nation's destiny. In "England Medieval Queens Volume Three," we delve into the captivating lives of these remarkable women who left an indelible mark on England and beyond.

Meet the Queens

In this volume, we uncover the fascinating tales of three exceptional queens: Queen Margaret of Anjou, Queen Anne Neville, and Queen Catherine Parr. While their reigns may have been overshadowed by male counterparts, their stories are truly legendary and deserve to be told.

Queen Margaret of Anjou: The Warrior Queen

Queen Margaret of Anjou was a woman of immense strength and determination. As the wife of King Henry VI, she wielded significant influence over the crown. In a time of political turmoil known as the Wars of the Roses, Margaret tirelessly fought to secure her husband's position on the throne. A fearless warrior and skilled tactician, she commanded armies and led battles, becoming a symbol of female empowerment in a male-dominated society.

However, Margaret's ambition and powerful influence came at a cost. She faced numerous challenges and made both allies and enemies along the way. Her complexities as a queen and a woman make her a captivating figure to explore in our volume.

Queen Anne Neville: The Forgotten Queen

Queen Anne Neville, wife of King Richard III, is often overshadowed by her husband and the infamous events of his reign. However, Anne played a pivotal role in the tumultuous Wars of the Roses. Her marriage to Richard brought stability and legitimacy to his reign, and she held her own in a ruthless time of power struggle.

Anne's story is one of resilience and loyalty. She supported her husband unconditionally, facing numerous trials and hardships together. Despite the chaotic nature of the era, Anne's steadfast commitment to her role as queen remains an inspiring tale that deserves recognition.

Queen Catherine Parr: The Educated Ruler

Queen Catherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of King Henry VIII, is often remembered as the surviving queen. However, her contribution to English history extends far beyond mere survival. Catherine was a highly educated and intellectual queen, becoming an influential patron of the arts and literature.

During her marriage to Henry VIII, Catherine used her position to promote religious reform and championed the rights of women. Despite the dangers surrounding Henry's court, Catherine's intelligence and wit allowed her to navigate precarious situations and maintain her principles.

Packed with dramatic true stories from one of European history’s most romantic and turbulent eras, this epic narrative chronicles the five vividly rendered Plantagenet queens who ruled England between 1299 and 1399.

The Age of Chivalry describes a period of medieval history dominated by the social, religious, and moral code of knighthood that prized noble deeds, battle in suits of armor, and the game of courtly love between aristocratic men and women. It was also a period of high drama in English history, which included the toppling of two kings, the Hundred Years’ War, the Black Death, and the Peasants’ Revolt. Feudalism was breaking down, resulting in social and political turmoil.

Against this dramatic backdrop, Alison Weir describes the lives and reigns of five queen consorts: Marguerite of France was seventeen when she became the second wife of sixty-year-old King Edward I. Isabella of France, later known as “the She Wolf,” dethroned her husband Edward II and ruled England with her lover. In contrast, Philippa of Hainault was a popular queen to the deposed king’s son, Edward III, when he regained the throne. Anne of Bohemia was queen to King Richard II, but she died young and childless. Isabella of Valois became Richard’s second wife when she was six years old, but when he was violently overthrown, she returned to France and remarried.

This was a turbulent and violent age, despite its chivalric color and ethos, and it stands as a vivid backdrop to the extraordinary stories of these queens’ lives.
