Peter Claver, (1580 - 1654) was a Spanish Jesuit priest and missionary. He was born in Catalonia, Spain and on account of his life and work, he became the patron saint of slaves, the Republic of Colombia, and of missionary work to African Americans. During the 40 years of his ministry in Granada, he is estimated to have personally baptized around 300,000 people (often in groups of 10). He was also said to have heard the confessions of over 5,000 slaves per year. He is widely held to be a heroic example of Christian charity and of human rights. The Congress of the Republic of Colombia holds September 9 as the Human Rights national Day in honor of him.
