Civil War Painting Depicting Soldiers In Battle The Three Cornered War: The Union The Confederacy And Native Peoples In The Fight For The West

When we think of American wars, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War II often come to mind. These were momentous conflicts that played a crucial role in shaping the nation we know today. However, one often overlooked war, known as "The Three Cornered War," had a profound impact on the history of the United States.

The Origins of the Conflict

The Three Cornered War refers to the tumultuous period from 1850 to 1865, which saw the convergence of three major events: the Mexican-American War, the California Gold Rush, and the American Civil War. This unique combination of circumstances created a complex and volatile situation along the U.S.-Mexico border and the American West.

As the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, the United States acquired a vast amount of territory, including California and much of the Southwest. Meanwhile, the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848 sparked a massive influx of fortune seekers from all around the world, seeking their share of the California Dream.

A Multi-faceted Conflict

The Three Cornered War involved not only battles between Mexican and American forces, but also clashes between American settlers and Indigenous tribes, as well as conflicts among seemingly unified armies within the Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War.

Native Americans resisted the westward expansion of the United States, defending their lands and way of life. This resistance led to tragic events such as the Sand Creek Massacre and the Fort Pillow Massacre, as well as the involvement of renowned Native American leaders such as Cochise and Geronimo.

Furthermore, the Civil War added another layer of complexity to the conflict. While the nation was tearing itself apart, Union and Confederate troops found themselves engaged in battles across the vast expanse of the American West. This included the famous Battle of Glorieta Pass in New Mexico, often referred to as the "Gettysburg of the West."

The Impact and Legacy

The Three Cornered War left a lasting impact on the development of the United States. The subsequent Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War, established the current border between Mexico and the United States. Moreover, the California Gold Rush brought unprecedented wealth and diversity to the newly formed state, significantly shaping its future.

In addition, the experiences gained and the tactics developed during the conflict in the West would prove to be invaluable for the Union Army during the later stages of the Civil War. The lessons learned from battles fought in the deserts and mountains of the American West would shape military strategies and ultimately contribute to the Union victory.

A Forgotten Chapter of American History

Despite its historical significance, the Three Cornered War has largely been overshadowed by other major conflicts in American history. This oversight is unjust, as the war played a crucial role in shaping the nation we know today.

By shedding light on this forgotten chapter, we gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by our ancestors and can appreciate the sacrifices made to create the country we inhabit today.

Remembering the Three Cornered War invites us to explore the complexities, the heroes, and the tragedies that occurred during this turbulent time. It is a testament to the resilience and fortitude of the people who shaped the United States, and a reminder of the long-lasting impact of forgotten conflicts.

Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History

A dramatic, riveting, and “fresh look at a region typically obscured in accounts of the Civil War. American history buffs will relish this entertaining and eye-opening portrait” (Publishers Weekly).

Megan Kate Nelson “expands our understanding of how the Civil War affected Indigenous peoples and helped to shape the nation” (Library Journal, starred review), reframing the era as one of national conflict—involving not just the North and South, but also the West.

Against the backdrop of this larger series of battles, Nelson introduces nine individuals: John R. Baylor, a Texas legislator who established the Confederate Territory of Arizona; Louisa Hawkins Canby, a Union Army wife who nursed Confederate soldiers back to health in Santa Fe; James Carleton, a professional soldier who engineered campaigns against Navajos and Apaches; Kit Carson, a famous frontiersman who led a regiment of volunteers against the Texans, Navajos, Kiowas, and Comanches; Juanita, a Navajo weaver who resisted Union campaigns against her people; Bill Davidson, a soldier who fought in all of the Confederacy’s major battles in New Mexico; Alonzo Ickis, an Iowa-born gold miner who fought on the side of the Union; John Clark, a friend of Abraham Lincoln’s who embraced the Republican vision for the West as New Mexico’s surveyor-general; and Mangas Coloradas, a revered Chiricahua Apache chief who worked to expand Apache territory in Arizona.

As we learn how these nine charismatic individuals fought for self-determination and control of the region, we also see the importance of individual actions in the midst of a larger military conflict. Based on letters and diaries, military records and oral histories, and photographs and maps from the time, “this history of invasions, battles, and forced migration shapes the United States to this day—and has never been told so well” (Pulitzer Prize–winning author T.J. Stiles).
