The Early Years:

Born on October 18, 1919, in Montreal, Quebec, Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliott Trudeau, commonly known as Pierre Trudeau, was the second child of Grace Elliott and Charles-Emile Trudeau. Growing up in a bilingual and affluent family, Trudeau was exposed to both English and French languages, which would prove vital in his future political career.

Trudeau's formative years were marked by academic excellence and adventurous pursuits. Described as an avid reader with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, he quickly earned a reputation for his sharp intellect and eclectic interests. Trudeau's passion for debate and keen interest in politics paved the way for his future endeavors.

Rise to Influence:

Trudeau's foray into politics began during his years at the Université de Montréal, where he was extensively involved in political activism. He emerged as a prominent student leader and, along with other intellectuals, founded the social democratic group "Cité Libre." This political periodical aimed to foster critical thinking and promote liberal ideals, establishing Trudeau as a charismatic and daring figure among his peers.

Trudeau's pursuit of further education took him beyond Canadian borders. In 1943, he traveled to Harvard University, where he enrolled in a Master's program in political economy. It was during this time that Trudeau's ideologies started to take shape under the influence of renowned intellectuals and philosophers.

War and Impact:

As World War II raged on, Trudeau felt compelled to serve his country. In 1942, he joined the Canadian Officer Training Corps and later enlisted in the Royal 22nd Regiment, commonly known as the Van Doos. The war transformed Trudeau, exposing him to the harsh realities of combat and the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers in the name of freedom.

This experience had a profound impact on Trudeau's political perspectives. Witnessing the horrors of war strengthened his advocacy for peace, social justice, and the promotion of unity within Canada. Trudeau's wartime experiences molded him into a compassionate leader, espousing principles of inclusivity and diversity that would come to define his tenure as Prime Minister.

Return to Canada:

After the war, Trudeau returned to Canada with a newfound purpose. Armed with his intellect and passion, he began teaching law at the Université de Montréal, simultaneously continuing his involvement in political activities.

During the 1950s, Trudeau's career trajectory was marked by significant milestones. In 1956, he completed his Doctorate in Law at the Université de Paris, further augmenting his reputation and knowledge base. His writing and speeches during this time showcased his intellect and unwavering commitment to liberal ideals.

The Quiet Revolution:

The 1960s marked a turning point in Canadian politics, and Trudeau became an instrumental figure in the social and political transformation of Quebec. Known as the Quiet Revolution, this period was characterized by efforts to modernize the province and redefine its relationship with the rest of Canada.

Trudeau, with his sharp wit and charismatic personality, quickly rose through the ranks. In 1965, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Mount Royal and subsequently appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.

The Legacy:

Trudeau's political journey reached its pinnacle in 1968 when he became the leader of the Liberal Party and subsequently Canada's Prime Minister. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by extensive reforms and policy changes, including the implementation of the Official Languages Act, the decriminalization of homosexuality, and the patriation of the Canadian Constitution.

Trudeau's vision for a strong and united Canada remains an enduring legacy. His commitment to bilingualism, multiculturalism, and individual rights set the stage for a society that celebrated diversity and inclusivity.

Trudeau's influence extends far beyond his time in office. His charismatic personality, passionate ideologies, and remarkable intellect continue to inspire future generations of Canadians to actively participate in shaping the nation's destiny.

:

The remarkable journey of Young Trudeau, from his upbringing to his influential position as Canada's Prime Minister, showcases the significant events and experiences that shaped his character and political ideologies. From his formative years of intellectual prowess to his wartime service and subsequent leading role in the Quiet Revolution, Trudeau's journey remains an inspiration and a testament to the power of personal growth and dedication.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau's legacy is an enduring reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on an entire nation.

This book shines a light of devastating clarity on French-Canadian society in the 1930s and 1940s, when young elites were raised to be pro-fascist, and democratic and liberal were terms of criticism. The model leaders to be admired were good Catholic dictators like Mussolini, Salazar in Portugal, Franco in Spain, and especially Pétain, collaborator with the Nazis in Vichy France. There were even demonstrations against Jews who were demonstrating against what the Nazis were doing in Germany.

Trudeau, far from being the rebel that other biographers have claimed, embraced this ideology. At his elite school, Brébeuf, he was a model student, the editor of the school magazine, and admired by the staff and his fellow students. But the fascist ideas and the people he admired – even when the war was going on, as late as 1944 – included extremists so terrible that at the war’s end they were shot. And then there’s his manifesto and his plan to stage a revolution against les Anglais.

This is astonishing material – and it’s all demonstrably true – based on personal papers of Trudeau that the authors were allowed to access after his death. What they have found has astounded and distressed them, but they both agree that the truth must be published.

Translated from the forthcoming French edition by William Johnson, this explosive book is sure to hit the headlines.
