Understanding the Format of GMAT Sentence Correction Questions

The Sentence Correction questions in the GMAT present you with sentences, parts of which need revision. Your task is to choose the grammatically correct option from the given choices. These questions require careful analysis of the original sentence and the answer choices to identify grammatical errors, improve clarity, and maintain coherence.

Sentence Correction questions often cover various aspects of grammar, such as subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, modifiers, parallelism, idiomatic expressions, and verb tenses. Therefore, a thorough understanding of English grammar rules and usage is essential to tackle these questions successfully.

Strategies for GMAT Sentence Correction

To excel in GMAT Sentence Correction, it is crucial to develop an effective strategy and approach. Here are some key strategies to consider:

  1. Brush up on Grammar: Dedicate time to review and reinforce your knowledge of grammar rules. Understand topics such as parts of speech, verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, parallelism, and pronoun usage.
  2. Practice Regularly: Familiarize yourself with the types of questions and common errors tested in Sentence Correction. Solve practice questions regularly to improve your accuracy and speed.
  3. Learn to Spot Errors: Train your eye to identify errors in sentence structure and grammar. Pay attention to common pitfalls such as faulty comparisons, ambiguous pronoun references, and illogical sentence structure.
  4. Maintain Contextual Clarity: Make sure the revised sentence maintains clarity, conciseness, and coherence. Be cautious of answer choices that change the intended meaning or distort the original sentence's purpose.
  5. Eliminate Answer Choices Strategically: Use the process of elimination to eliminate incorrect answer choices. Identify clear errors in the answer choices, and eliminate options that do not address the issues present in the original sentence.

Prioritizing Your Study Approach

When preparing for Sentence Correction, it is important to understand your strengths and weaknesses. Focus on improving your grasp of concepts that challenge you the most. Prioritize studying grammar rules that frequently appear in Sentence Correction questions and ensure you have a solid foundation in these areas.

Additionally, dedicate time to practice questions that reflect the difficulty level and format of actual GMAT Sentence Correction items. Timed practice sessions will help you develop the ability to manage time effectively during the exam.

Recommended Resources for GMAT Sentence Correction

There are various resources available to help you prepare for GMAT Sentence Correction. Here are some recommended resources:

We have scanned over 900 Sentence Correction questions in actual GMATs, and have found that they feature just 25 types of mistakes. After lucid lessons on both basic and subtle grammatical concepts, we have explained each of these 25 types with authentic examples, and have given you, for your practice, 20 sets of 15 questions each, of the same types and levels of difficulty as in an actual GMAT. These are followed by a masterly analysis of each question. So, when you actually face such questions while taking your GMAT, you would be doing so the twentyfirst, and not the first, time!
Unlike other Guides which first identify the correct answer to a question and explain why it is the correct one, this Ideal Guide teaches you how to arrive at the correct answer by yourself in the shortest possible time, since that is what you have to do when you sit for the test.
