Adolph Coors III, An American Brewery Mogul, Whose Life Was Tragically Cut Short The Death Of An Heir: Adolph Coors III And The Murder That Rocked An American Brewing Dynasty

In the history of American breweries, few names are as iconic as the Coors family. Known for their quality beer and long-standing tradition, the Coors Brewery became a household name. However, in 1960, the family was shattered by a tragedy that rocked the nation. Adolph Coors III, the heir to the brewing dynasty, was brutally murdered, sending shockwaves throughout the country.

The Rise of the Coors Dynasty

The Coors family journey to success began in the mid-19th century when Adolph Coors, a German immigrant, established a brewery in Golden, Colorado. Through determination and a commitment to producing high-quality beer, the Coors Brewery became a staple in American households.

Adolph Coors III, born in 1916, grew up amidst the family's legacy of brewing excellence. As he reached adulthood, he took the reins of the family business, expanding its reach and reputation even further. Under his leadership, Coors beer gained widespread popularity and became a symbol of American brewing craftsmanship.

The Mysterious Disappearance

On February 9, 1960, Adolph Coors III left his Golden, Colorado home for work but never arrived at the brewery. Concerned family members immediately launched a search, fearing the worst. Days turned into weeks, and the search garnered national attention. Everyone was desperate for answers.

It wasn't until several months later that investigators found a breakthrough. Coors' car was discovered near a bridge, abandoned. Upon closer inspection, they found traces of blood inside the vehicle, confirming everyone's worst fears.

The Murder Investigation

The discovery of Coors' car led to an intensive investigation that captivated the nation. Law enforcement agencies from across the country joined forces, determined to find the culprits and bring them to justice. The hunt for answers became a priority for Americans everywhere.

After months of tireless efforts by investigators, a breakthrough came in September of 1960. Joseph Corbett Jr., a convicted kidnapper and murderer, was caught, and evidence soon connected him to the crime. Corbett had targeted Coors for a ransom, but the situation escalated, and he ultimately shot the brewing heir.

The Legacy Lives On

The murder of Adolph Coors III sent shockwaves throughout the nation, bringing a tragic end to a brewing dynasty. However, the Coors family did not let their patriarch's death define their legacy. They vowed to carry on his vision and uphold the tradition of excellence he had championed throughout his life.

Today, the Coors Brewery continues to thrive, producing beloved beers that people around the world enjoy. Adolph Coors III may be gone, but his memory lives on in the hearts of beer enthusiasts and those who appreciate the perseverance of a proud American family.

The Death of an Heir is Philip Jett's chilling true account of the Coors family’s gilded American dream that turned into a nightmare when a meticulously plotted kidnapping went horribly wrong.

In the 1950s and 60s, the Coors dynasty reigned over Golden, Colorado, seemingly invincible. When rumblings about labor unions threatened to destabilize the family's brewery, Adolph Coors, Jr., the septuagenarian president of the company, drew a hard line, refusing to budge. They had worked hard for what they had, and no one had a right to take it from them. What they'd soon realize was that they had more to lose than they could have imagined.

On the morning of Tuesday, February 9, 1960, Adolph “Ad” Coors III, the 44-year-old CEO of the multimillion dollar Colorado beer empire, stepped into his car and headed for the brewery twelve miles away. At a bridge he stopped to help a man in a yellow Mercury sedan. On the back seat lay handcuffs and leg irons. The glove box held a ransom note ready to be mailed. His coat pocket shielded a loaded pistol.

What happened next set off the largest U.S. manhunt since the Lindbergh kidnapping. State and local authorities, along with the FBI personally spearheaded by its director J. Edgar Hoover, burst into action attempting to locate Ad and his kidnapper. The dragnet spanned a continent. All the while, Ad’s grief-stricken wife and children waited, tormented by the unrelenting silence. The Death of an Heir reveals the true story behind the tragic murder of Colorado’s favorite son.
