Jeffrey Sachs, an esteemed economist, is a name synonymous with efforts to end global poverty. His transformative work in implementing sustainable development strategies and addressing crucial issues such as healthcare, education, and economic growth have made him a leading figure in the fight against poverty.

The Early Years

Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1954, Jeffrey Sachs displayed exceptional intelligence from a young age. He attended Harvard University, where he earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. It was during his time at Harvard that Sachs started to show a deep interest in solving some of the world's most pressing problems, particularly pertaining to poverty and economic inequality.

Sachs' journey to becoming a global poverty expert began in the late 1980s when he served as an advisor to several governments in Eastern Europe during their transition from communism to market-based economies. This experience exposed him to the harsh realities faced by those living in extreme poverty and motivated him to dedicate his life to eradicating it.

The Millennium Development Goals

In 2000, Sachs played a pivotal role in the creation of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These goals aimed to address multiple dimensions of poverty, including hunger, education, and healthcare, by 2015. Sachs, along with his team at the Earth Institute of Columbia University, developed strategies and action plans to achieve these ambitious targets.

One of the key areas where Sachs focused his efforts was in Africa, a continent disproportionately affected by poverty. He recognized that addressing poverty required a comprehensive approach focusing on diverse sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, and education. Through targeted investment, sustainable development, and policy reforms, Sachs worked towards improving living conditions and empowering communities in Africa.

The Sustainable Development Goals

Building on the success of the MDGs, Sachs became a strong advocate for the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2015, all 193 member states of the United Nations committed to these global goals, which aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.

Sachs, now serving as the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, has continued to shape the global development agenda. He emphasizes the importance of integrating social, economic, and environmental factors to achieve sustainable and equitable growth. His expertise in economics and policy-making has made him a trusted advisor to governments, international organizations, and philanthropic foundations.

A Controversial Figure

Despite his contributions to the field, Sachs has not been exempt from criticism. Some argue that his approach to development is too focused on economic growth and fails to address deeper societal issues. Others point to the complexities of poverty eradication and question the feasibility of achieving such ambitious goals within the proposed timelines. Nonetheless, Sachs remains undeterred in his pursuit of a poverty-free world.

The Legacy of Jeffrey Sachs

Jeffrey Sachs has left an indelible mark on the fight against poverty. Through his practical expertise, he has provided tangible solutions that have positively impacted the lives of millions around the world. His work has inspired a new generation of economists and policymakers to actively engage in efforts to end poverty and create a more just and sustainable world.

As we move closer to the target year of the SDGs, the world looks to visionaries like Sachs to steer us in the right direction. With unwavering determination, innovative thinking, and collaborative efforts, there is hope that poverty can indeed be eliminated in our lifetime.

A powerful portrayal of Jeffrey Sachs's ambitious quest to end global poverty

"The poor you will always have with you," to cite the Gospel of Matthew 26:11. Jeffrey Sachs—celebrated economist, special advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations, and author of the influential bestseller
The End of Poverty—disagrees.  In his view, poverty is a problem that can be solved. With single-minded determination he has attempted to put into practice his theories about ending extreme poverty, to prove that the world's most destitute people can be lifted onto "the ladder of development."

In 2006, Sachs launched the Millennium Villages Project, a daring five-year experiment designed to test his theories in Africa. The first Millennium village was in Sauri, a remote cluster of farming communities in western Kenya. The initial results were encouraging. With his first taste of success, and backed by one hundred twenty million dollars from George Soros and other likeminded donors, Sachs rolled out a dozen model villages in ten sub-Saharan countries. Once his approach was validated it would be scaled up across the entire continent. At least that was the idea.

For the past six years, Nina Munk has reported deeply on the Millennium Villages Project, accompanying Sachs on his official trips to Africa and listening in on conversations with heads-of-state, humanitarian organizations, rival economists, and development experts. She has immersed herself in the lives of people in two Millennium villages: Ruhiira, in southwest Uganda, and Dertu, in the arid borderland between Kenya and Somalia. Accepting the hospitality of camel herders and small-hold farmers, and witnessing their struggle to survive, Munk came to understand the real-life issues that challenge Sachs's formula for ending global poverty.

THE IDEALIST is the profound and moving story of what happens when the abstract theories of a brilliant, driven man meet the reality of human life.
