Drawn by a Shared Vision

John, a devoted follower of the radical Methodist movement, found solace in the teachings of George Whitefield and John Wesley. Elizabeth, seeking a deeper connection with God, was captivated by the passionate sermons of these charismatic preachers. Their shared fascination with spiritual awakening led them to form a deep bond, eventually blossoming into an unbreakable love that would withstand the trials and tribulations that lay ahead.

A Voyage of Faith

Driven by their unwavering faith, John and Elizabeth set sail on a voyage across the vast Atlantic Ocean. They left behind their familiar lives, embarking on a treacherous journey to the New World. With nothing more than their love and devotion, they aimed to spread their message of salvation, hoping to touch the lives of those they encountered along the way.

The couple faced tremendous hardships during their sea voyage, battling fierce storms, sickness, and the constant threat of pirates lurking in the vast expanse. Yet, their unshakable faith sustained them through the darkest of times, strengthening their resolve to bring light to the souls lost in the vastness of the Atlantic World.

Embracing New Worlds, Embracing New Souls

As they disembarked on the shores of the New World, John and Elizabeth were greeted with a diversity they had never before witnessed. They felt a deep calling to reach out to the enslaved population, challenging the prevailing social norms and advocating for the spiritual emancipation of all. Their message of love, equality, and salvation resonated with many, establishing them as catalysts for change in an era marred by inequality and oppression.

The Influence of the Enlightenment

The couple's spiritual quest was not devoid of the intellectual and philosophical currents sweeping across the Atlantic World. The Enlightenment, with its emphasis on reason, science, and individual freedom, had a profound impact on their beliefs. They eagerly engaged in intellectual discourse, fusing their religious fervor with rational thought. The Enlightenment's concepts of universal rights and social progress became intertwined with their spiritual journey, shaping a vision of a more inclusive and enlightened society.

A Legacy That Transcends Time

The couple's legacy extends far beyond the boundaries of the eighteenth century. Their tireless efforts laid the groundwork for future generations to carry the torch of spiritual awakening and social justice. Their writings and teachings continue to inspire, challenging individuals to question prevailing norms and to seek a deeper connection with the divine.

The story of John and Elizabeth is a testament to the power of faith, love, and the human spirit. Their spiritual journey in the Atlantic World serves as a reminder that within the vastness of life's challenges, an unwavering belief can guide us towards a greater purpose. As we navigate our way through the complexities of the modern world, their story compels us to reflect and seek our own journeys of spiritual enlightenment.

John and Elizabeth's spiritual journey in the Atlantic World stands as an enduring testament to the human capacity for resilience and transformation. Their lives, intertwined with the tumultuous events of the eighteenth century, exemplify the extraordinary impact that two individuals, bound by love and faith, can have on the world around them. As we delve into the annals of history, their story serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring us to embark on our own spiritual quests and to make a lasting difference in the world.

Jean-Francois Reynier, a French Swiss Huguenot, and his wife, Maria Barbara Knoll, a Lutheran from the German territories, crossed the Atlantic several times and lived among Protestants, Jews, African slaves, and Native Americans from Suriname to New York and many places in between. While they preached to and doctored many Atlantic peoples in religious missions, revivals, and communal experiments, they encountered scandals, bouts of madness, and other turmoil, including within their own marriage. Aaron Spencer Fogleman's riveting narrative offers a lens through which to better understand how individuals engaged with the eighteenth-century Atlantic world and how men and women experienced many of its important aspects differently.
Reynier's and Knoll's lives illuminate an underside of empire where religious radicals fought against church authority and each other to find and spread the truth; where Atlantic peoples had spiritual, medical, and linguistic encounters that authorities could not always understand or control; and where wives disobeyed husbands to seek their own truth and opportunity.
